. This site is the result of a national study of college students’ search for meaning and purpose in their lives. It’s a fascinating read that shows, without a doubt, that young adults (mainly undergraduates in the study) believe their spiritual lives are important and are searching for ways to express that aspect of their lives. For this assignment, please explore the site, then

1. Define and briefly summarize the 5 spiritual measures that they used in this study. They include: Equanimity, Spiritual Quest, Ethic of Caring, Charitable Involvement, and Ecumenical Worldview.

Then please answer these two questions:

2. Are these ideas new to you with regards to spirituality? and…

3. Are there any areas that you are already pursuing but didn’t think they were spiritual in nature?

Please completely and thoughtfully explain your answers. ½ page, single spaced. 10 pts. possible.

ASSIGNMENT: Take at least 15 minutes to STOP. No sound, no music, no talking, no napping, etc. Find a quiet place to just stop and get empty. If it would be helpful, concentrate on your breathing while you do this (turn 3 pages in your packet for advice on how to do this).

THEN, after the 15 minutes, ponder these questions.

Am I in touch with my spiritual self?

Do I value
that
part—
the spiritual part–
of my total health? Why or why not?

Am I comfortable with my idea of what spirituality is and, if I am not, am I willing to explore new ideas?

Is there anyone I can talk to about these things to help clarify this issue in my life? Who?

LAST QUESTION: Was stopping hard? Easy? A new idea? A familiar discipline? Etc…Please give your response to this exercise in stopping and doing nothing for 15 minutes.

YOU MAY HAND WRITE ON THE PAGE FROM THE PACKET. PLEASE GIVE THOUGHTFUL ANSWERS, NO MATTER HOW YOU FELT. 10 PTS. POSSIBLE

The power of mood

So can treating depression prevent disease? No, but it can surely help reduce its likelihood. Given that, many experts hope that physicians will begin to make mental-health assessments a routine part of annual checkups. But that’s been proposed before and it hasn’t come easily. “When you only have roughly eight minutes with your primary doctor,” says Lydia Lewis, president of the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, “it’s kind of hard to get into the realm of depression. And when you go to see a specialist, the cardiologist is thinking just about your heart.”

So while researchers hold conferences, conduct studies and write scholarly papers, Lewis has some more immediate advice for patients looking to enlist whatever tools are available to help them stay well. “We need to get people to go in and ask these questions of their physicians,” she says. Bill Valvo, who learned this lesson more powerfully than most, could not agree more. “I think people are totally unaware of what’s going on,” he says, “and I’m convinced that education is a key part of what we need to be doing.” The essence of that education: cure the mind, and you might just help save the body.
