Sororities and fraternities are both good and bad. Most people think they are all bad, but they are not. They can lead to networking and professional opportunities after graduation, lifelong friendships, and a support system to help students graduate from college.

It is Tuesday night at a local college, and midterm exams are just two weeks away. A pretty girl in her early twenties jumps naked into a pool while an inebriated crowd around the pool cheers and raises beer cans in salute. The music is so loud, people must shout to be heard. Inside the house, dimly lit corners are filled with couples groping each other and passionately kissing. A couple under the pool table is well past “second base,” but no one notices as they struggle to build a pyramid of empty cans on top of the table. This is the steroetypical view of a fraternity or sorority party. Parties like these are thought to be the reason many students flunk out of college, yet for many students, joining a sorority and fraternity is a positive step towards graduation and professional success in the future. Sororities and fraternities are not as bad as people think. Some do host wild parties and do cruel things to freshman who want to join, but members also build friendships that last forever. They may even get a job later in life because of their membership. And even though they party a lot, sometimes members help each other with school work by sharing old tests and papers that can be re-used.
