Conflict is something that every manager will encounter while trying to achieve organizational success. The ability to identify the conflict, develop a means to overcome it, and maintain positive momentum forward is something successful managers must develop. Managerial experience plays a part in successfully avoiding or negotiating conflict, but having knowledge of alternative dispute resolutions or negotiating is an important element of success. Also, the ways that individuals are influenced or persuaded to do certain activities can lead to conflict and dissatisfaction. “Managers need to be able to guide diverse individuals, who are often powerfully motivated to put their own self-interests first, to pursue common objectives. At stake in this tug-of-war between individual and collective interests is no less than the ultimate survival of the organization.”
We will read through the textbook, discuss related theories, and study outside readings/case studies to gain knowledge in this week’s focused areas of emphasis.
