The topic of your essay needs to be a global societal problem from the following list
Poverty and income inequality
Reflect: Based on the topic that you have chosen, you will need to use critical thinking skills to thoroughly understand how this topic can be a global societal problem and determine some logical solutions to the problem.
Hello Class,
After reading the literature and watching the videos. We were asked to explain at least five
elements of critical thinking that we found in the reading materials. I found that you cannot have
bias opinions, you have to look at all the facts, weigh all actions past and present, create a
solution that can help the problem and be open minded.
I have an article about COVID-19 and the aftermath that left more people in poverty. This article
also talks about how the poverty threshold is measured by lawmakers. Lillian Kilduff the
research analyst who wrote this article stuck to the facts from the US Census Bureau. She did not
go off her emotions from her doing the research. “Most researchers, policymakers, and others
who study poverty would agree that the official measure is flawed. The official poverty measure
is based on a family’s pretax cash income and does not include non-cash benefits from housing
subsidies, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), or other forms of
government relief.7 Costs related to housing, clothing, transportation, and other expenses
commonly considered basic human needs are not considered. And the official measure does not
account for variations in the cost of living across the country” (Lillian Kilduff January 31, 2022).
I have a video that lacks good critical thinking skills, even though this is from the movie Wolf of
Wall Street. It still shows how everyone will have personal biases when it comes to poverty.
He’s speaking from a personal standpoint and does not have facts to back up his point of view.

Introduction
Poverty and income inequality is growing rapid around the world. Since COVID-19
poverty has risen more than 10.4% according to the US Census Bureau of 2020. The poverty
threshold needs to be re-examined so the government can get it right about how many people are
actually living in poverty. In 2017 the US Census Bureau calculated that a family of four can live
off $24,600 which would make them not in poverty according to the US Census Bureau.
Therefore, we need to re-examine the threshold of poverty again. There is no way possible that a
family of four is making it without hardship and struggle. You cannot live on $24,600 income a
year with a family of four. The Income inequality is very poorly managed by governments, and
its affiliates agencies. There’s no way that major Corporations and Big Companies should be
able to go to third world countries and get low wage labor cost without any repercussions.
There are many people trying to be productive citizens and do what’s right for themselves
and their families. Working and trying to get ahead in life to be able to buy food, pay bills and
have healthcare for their families. With low paying jobs it’s hard to be able to afford all the
necessary things of living.

This article tells us about how systematically change must happen in order for Income
Inequalities and poverty to decrease. Not having the basic things in life such as adequate food,
shelter, and education are all signs of lack of resources and poverty.

The article talks about how the impact of COVID-19 had effects on one community more
than the others. Due to poverty and the inequality of income those areas where demolished with
COVID-19. The people could not afford to have proper health care to help during the pandemic.
A lot of people lost their jobs and was on unemployment. Which in term they weren’t able to pay
their mortgage or rent. This created another situation that would leave tenants homeless, once
again another third and fourth order of effect.

This article addresses a few topics that were analyzed by expert. About the best way to
tackle poverty and debate if inequality exists. The article states “This was a way of underscoring
how utterly shocking it was for Americans to be returning to conditions associated with one of
the most regrettable periods of US history, a period marked by extreme inequality, rampant
political corruption, and the rise of Jim Crow and overtly racist immigration restrictions, as well
as by laissez-faire and social Darwinist doctrines that helped to justify it all” (O’Connor,
Alice. History of Political Economy). Everyone understand that there is a big gap from poor to
rich. It’s that gap that’s being analyzed to understand how the gap can close and what are the
next steps to help income inequality and poverty. This problem is everywhere in the world and
no government seem to be able to help solve or reduce the problem.
Hello Class,
For my week 5 final paper the global societal issue that I choose is Poverty and income
inequality. I think this is going to be an interesting topic for me. I see so many people in need of
help with paying their bills because they don’t make enough money. Or they need help with food
because it is so expensive right now. Also, with some food shortages it makes it next to
impossible for some people to make ends meet.
To make sure that my information comes from a scholarly source I will utilize the school’s
suggested sources such as the UAGC Library and use the internet sources that my Norton and
McAfee tells me. They verify sites and gives them a green check mark that means their verified
and not fake.
The two scholarly journal articles from the UAGC Library that I will summarize is
Poverty, inequality, and evaluation: Changing Perspectives. This article talks about how social
tensions and violence can come about from inequalities.
The second article is Healthcare poverty-inequality and government quick fixes. This article
talks about how COVID-19 affected one group of people more than other groups.
