Training manual project
(100 points)

Over the last two weeks, the focus of the course will be on the implementation and use of the cognitive training model to create an instructional package. This package will consist of a training manual for instructional designers on how to identify, select, and use instructional techniques (e.g., analogies) and instructional approaches/methods (e.g., case-based instruction). Please make sure that you understand: The target learners of your instructional package are instructional designers and the content area is on instructional strategies not phases of instructional design. If your project does not meet the requirements highlighted, no matter how good your writing is, the grade you get will be a zero. The requirement for this project is very specific. If you have a problem understanding the requirement, please talk to me as early as possible. Obviously, this is an even bigger thing!! Combining Driscoll

(2005) and Mayer (2008) with Foshay, et al. (2003) will help you complete this project. Please note: we do not discuss Foshay as we do Driscoll and Mayer. It does not mean that Foshay is not of the same importance. As a matter of fact, Foshay will help you more directly with your training manual project. However, without Driscoll and/or Mayer, you will hardly be able to design instruction that is truly effective, efficient, and appealing. Again, start your “thinking” early. A top student in my previous class said: “This is a lot harder than I thought it would be, and I wish I would have started it mid-semester, so I could have flexed it and shaped it much better than time allows me now. Foshay offers great tips and structural ideas.” I hope this quotation can be used as a “warning” for you to start this project as early as you can.

Requirements: Develop chapters within the manual that describe:

What it is (description of the strategy/approach),

When to select and use it (conditions of use),

Why it should be selected (research on effectiveness of the strategy),

How it is best utilized, and

Related research and references

Make sure that you understand you do need to include learning objectives and assessment items in each chapter. You also need to design instructional strategies for your instruction. Make sure that you “study” the rubric that will be used to grade your training manual so you will not miss anything that should be reflected in your writing in order to receive points for all the required criteria. I may not answer more questions by the time you do your project. Discuss with me at an earlier stage. Assume that you were hired somewhere and assigned this project. You did not have anyone to discuss with because you were the expert. You had to complete it by the due date and meet all the requirements “perfectly;” otherwise, you would be “fired.” What would you do and how would you do it??? The paper and the project will be submitted through SafeAssignment on the Blackboard course site. SafeAssignment is a program that checks originality of the project/paper. All submissions through SafeAssignment are saved on the ISUdatabase. A project that is found not original will automatically get an F.

Make sure that you submit your original work written or designed for this class.

This is the important question on Training manual project I hope it will be helpful for you to understand.

Dr. Feng-Qai Lai,

I am reading the guidance for our training manual and, I apologize, I am confused. I understand who the manual is supposed to be written for: Instructional Designers.  However, the lines get blurry when I try to understand what is meant by instructional strategies, techniques, and methods.

how to identify, select, and use instructional techniques?  This means to identify, for example, when case-based instruction would best be used? Or another example would be when teaching facts might best be used?

Does instructional strategy = cased based instruction, deliberate practice, skill learning, discussions, lectures, group projects, feedback?

For instance, have a chapter on Case Based Instruction.  Identify why etc..you use it…and the techniques

Or does instructional strategy in this context = Behaviorist, cognitivst, constructivist or something else.

Content area is instructional strategies not phases…phases is another way of saying the ISD process right?  Do not outline or show, performing work analysis, writing performance objective…in other words don’t write or tell the instructional designer how to use instructional system process.

I am not looking for anyone to tell me how to do it, I just want to ensure I understand the direction I need to take to complete the project.

I am sure the answer is simple.  I am trying to plan my time.  Working fulltime and meeting the requirements of class has been tough…I want to ensure I do not waste the time I spend working on the manual project.

Thank you,

Dwayne

RE: Training Manual question

Dwayne,

Please feel free to ask quesions any time when you have them. I copy your questions below and put my answer below each of your questions. I hope my answers will help.

how to identify, select, and use instructional techniques? This means to identify, for example, when case-based instruction would best be used? Or another example would be when teaching facts might best be used?

LAI: This is one section of each chapter you will write. For each chapter, focus on one strategy. For example, if one of your chapters is about analogy, there is a section in this chapter where you need to tell instructional designers when to select and use analogy. You may say something like: “Analogy is best used when you are teaching abstract concepts …” providing rationale to support what you say and examples to help your learners understand.

Does instructional strategy = cased based instruction, deliberate practice, skill learning, discussions, lectures, group projects, feedback?

LAI: Please review Mayer’s book. Here are some examples for instructional strategies: mnemonics, imagery, examples, analogy, chunking, concept mapping, …

For instance, have a chapter on Case Based Instruction. Identify why etc..you use it…and the techniques

LAI: Yes, each chapter focuses on one strategy. Case-based instruction is more a delivery strategy.

Or does instructional strategy in this context = Behaviorist, cognitivst, constructivist or something else.

LAI: No.   What you listed above are different theories/philosophies.

Content area is instructional strategies not phases…phases is another way of saying the ISD process right? Do not outline or show, performing work analysis, writing performance objective…in other words don’t write or tell the instructional designer how to use instructional system process.

LAI: Your understanding is correct. You focus on instructional-strategy design, not how to design instruction following an instructional design model.
