Ethics-Primary Task ResponsesP2DB

Post by Jonathan

The most reverberating piece of evidence that most stated as American ethics for society is the Constitution of the United States of America. Everyone agrees that they can be considered as our first code of ethics. In regards to the scenario put forth, everyone has the same questions towards specific actions. Is it right for the police officers to accept food and coffee from anyone? Should the police department have rules against it? Should favors from officers be expected if each party had a personal relationship? Is it that hard to separate work from personal life? How does the timing of this scenario in 1962 affect the outcome? Everyone seems to agree that the officer was right to give the storeowner a ticket for running a red light.

First of all, if you break the law, you should pay the consequences. That’s simple and should be simple. No one is above the law and that’s how it should always be in order to retain the integrity of the security of the citizens. I also believe that citizens themselves should be smart enough to realize that it is their duty as well to maintain law and order and to not expect to get away with breaking the law. The discussion board revealed that most people do feel the same as I do but would go about it in different ways. I like how some people pulled from their personal experience such as speaking to members of their families who served as a police officer or may have been police officers themselves.

The one thing I would liked to have seen since everyone had an opinion of it was what they would have done as a solution to make sure the situation could have been handled in a much more professional manner. There is a code of ethics for any police department, but of course this is based solely on the type of person you are. Having a good police force is based mainly on having honest people making up your police force. I did not expect someone to mention that they would be sad about losing their privileges to free coffee and donuts if they did give the storeowner a ticket instead of a handshake. I would not even think of this, but then again we are only human and that would be a natural inclination, which is why a code of ethics may be greatly needed.

After viewing everyone responses from the scenario, my peers had different opinions when dealing with the store owner. Some felt well lets ticket him, due to the young officer abroad, although they may have felt really bad about issuing the ticket everyone must abide by the rules and regulations of the law, and I totally agree. Some think its ok to accept food if offered, well maybe so in their opinion but if the deputy had not accept freebies in the first beginning his job would have been a lot easier when ticketing the store owner, and in addition to the deputy would have followed the department policies to not accept freebies only paycheck.

Interacting with my peers by discussion is awesome tool due to virtual campus. The most compelling points were reading each other ideas and examples given, to understand the assignment a bit clearer. The only complaint I have and maybe some others peers as well, there are peers responding under one classmate post several times and the other classmates receive no feedback. We are all here to learn from each other and leaving out someone post because you may not understand it is not enough to skip the post. In my opinion, there is some sentence that may catch your eye, and develop your own analysis, to me it’s not fair and no I am not whining I am so honest. I try to respond to the peers who have not received feedback. Please note if there DB post (Discussion Board) is late well I totally agree without the response. Let try to help each other, instead of picks and chooses. Yes we all have our opinion if we chose to respond to your post but let’s make sure everyone is treated fairly that submits assignment in a timely manner.

Participating in this discussion board helps to broaden my ideas, sometimes you make look at your information from your standpoint but after reading peer responses it helps you to add a bit more volume to your ideas, the discussion board is all about learning from each other and understanding the assignment at hand.

I think information such as what consequences the deputy may suffer do to accepting freebies, if any? In addition why did the storeowner run the red light was there some type of medical emergency, before deciding to ticket, or does it matter if there was an emergency at hand? At this time there is no additional feedback needed. I truly enjoyed this discussion!!

Reflective Summary

I have learned that the examination of police misconduct began as early as the 1800s, when it was seen necessary for a code of ethics. Police chiefs got together and formed it so as to provide guidance to the police in providing fair and confidential service to all people, as is their constitutional right. Secondly, the police force today has grown from a private force into a public force hence they are accountable to the general public and face scrutiny.

It was unanimously agreed that the right and just thing for the police chief was to punish the offender such as by writing him a ticket. The need to do the right thing gives beyond their acquaintance as well as the freebies that come with it. There is need to end any culture of bribery that may be present. This can only be achieved by the senior police officers setting a good example to the rookies. If the rookies learn to act right then the entire police force will be reformed with time.

The police force has improved significantly over the past 50 years to be a transparent institution that is aimed at ensuring justice and upholding the law. Police officers today are supposed to act in line with the code of ethics. The seniority of an officer does not exempt him or her from acting in line with the law.

My participation in this discussion helped me understand that the discussion board provides a forum for learners to interact and assists in building a community of learners. These learners can interact, share information and exchange ideas. This helps them in understanding better as well as introducing new approaches and views. The discussion board also gives room for clarification. It provides room for reflection due to different views and perspectives that make a learner reflect on their own thoughts as well as their counterparts. It gives a room for the learner to critically examine all the responses and learn from them.

Approaches that could have yielded valuable information include online discussion forums, social networks such as linked in and other applications such as classrooms. These are forums where the students can pose questions for discussion in topics of mutual interests. Teachers can also aid the discussions by clarifying on issues as well as correcting any misleading information. Most of the issues in this discussion are clear and have been adequately addressed through student networking.

However, there is need for clarity on the role of the junior officers, the rookies, in ensuring accountability and responsibility of their actions. This is especially in situations where they do not do the right thing. In addition to this, what can and should be done in order to strike a balance between the upholding of the laws and maintenance of proper friendships. There is need for clarity on this because all the discussion members took a hard stand on the need to do the right thing. Is there not a way that the police chief could have maintained a balance? Another area of clarification is the expectation of other officers. This is in regard to the freebies they receive and their treatment of the officer thereafter.
