Final Project – Systems Engineering
This final project will ensure that you understand the entire Systems Engineering process and understand how
each component fits into the Information Technology domain. We will NOT be developing a system, so this
project only takes us to Project Design Reviews and not to full Operations and Maintenance of the systems.
What will we do?
Select a system relevant to your current employer, former employer, or some other system you’d like to build. (I
recommend this not be as large as “Creating an alternative Facebook.” Choose something that seems that it
might have a reasonable number of requirements. Based on your understanding of the mission CONOP of the
system you wish to build, write a set of requirements as a document (Excel, Word) or a Relational Database.
Ensure you capture all L0 requirements and derive potential L1 requirements. Use hyperlinks to show
traceability between requirements where appropriate (or relations in a database).
Identify which of the requirements are most uncertain in terms of your ability to satisfy them and allocate
reserves (margins) to those requirements in your requirements document and justify these margins. Also identify
how each requirement will be verified later.
Consider a concept generation method / creativity technique to conceptualize the system (after you have L0 and
L1 requirements) – Mind-map, morphological matrix, or some other technique. Select a concept that your feel
would meet the needs of the requirements using a Pugh Matrix to score the concepts you generated. Create an
OPM diagram / sketch of the system to show the functions (ovals) and how they map to elements of form
(rectangles). Show any design variables you may want to consider as well. Show any obvious modules in your
concept (i.e. portions of your concept that are tightly coupled).
Derive any additional technical requirements from the concept you defined that you were not able to define in
your original requirements document. These more refined technical requirements may not be solution “neutral”
but depend on your selected concept. (Please note which of these requirements have been added following the
concept generation and system architecture phase).
Prepare a Preliminary Design Review (PDR) Data Package. The PDR is a “multi-disciplined technical review to
ensure that the system under review can proceed into detailed design, and can meet the stated performance
requirements within cost (program budget), schedule (program schedule), risk, and other system constraints”.
These document shall demonstrate:

An understanding of the Mission Requirements
Allocation and derivation of system and subsystem requirements
Definition of the CONOP
Overview of the preliminary design that meets specified requirements
Results of, or identification of, necessary trades to support preliminary design
Results of, or identification of, necessary prototyping or testing efforts necessary to support or finalize
preliminary design
Preliminary budget *
Detailed development schedule *
* These are of lesser importance and don’t have to be accurate. I just want to make you aware that in a PDR,
these will usually be an important aspect as well!
The PDR materials will be presented via video recording and should be about 30 minutes. It should discuss
everything from the CONOP of the system you are proposing to some of the alternatives you did not select, how
you selected the proposed system, and the requirements / preliminary budget / development schedule in the
PDR.

Garced’s Craft Corner CONOP
Version 1.0
October 2021
GCC CONOP
Overview
Crafting is a fun pastime that many people consider a popular hobby. For some crafting is an
activity preferred to be done alone, while others take the opportunity to meet new people and
learn new craft skills from others.
This document describes a general Concept of operations (CONOPS) of a future new website
called Garced’s Craft Corner. GCC will be a website where individuals can learn how to make
crafts and schedule small social events to make crafts with other fellow craft enthusiasts.
The purpose of Garced’s Craft Corner is to:
● Inform crafters of the correct materials to use for crafts
● Inform crafters of where to buy materials for crafts
● Inform craters how to complete crafts with step-by-step instructions
● Coordinate meetings between crafters so crafts can be completed in small social groups
that are cheaper than similar events in the local area
● Hold cheaper options for craft events compared to other options in the Frederick County
area
The primary members involved, but not limited to include:
● Alexandra Garced (designer of Garced’s Creative Corner)
● Web developers
● Website hosting service
The design of the website will be completed by Alexandra Garced. Web creators/developers are
needed to create the website. Frederick County residents will learn of GCC through multiple
social media platforms managed by AG.

2. Goals of Garced’s Craft Corner
Provide an opportunity for FCCM to learn different crafts of different types and share their
crafting ideas. Community members may learn from one another from detailed instructional
steps in person and online. Steps include, but are not limited to, which materials to use and where
to purchase/access these materials. These types of events are an alternative to other crating
events held by other organizations in the community.
5|Page
GCC CONOP
2.1 Online/At-Home Crafting
Crafting instructions are to be available on GCC for a variety of different types of crafts. Crafts
available on the website are recommended by members. These recommended crafts are assessed
for accuracy and uploaded to the website by AG (creator). Once the member selects which craft
they would like to complete the following information will be provided: crating materials needed
(with direct web links to vendors that sell the materials), numbered and detailed crafting written
steps, and a short instructional video outlining how to complete the craft. These resources may
be used to complete crafts at home without the additional expenses of paying to reach a
comparable crafting event (time, gas, and the event itself). If there is a situation where a member
has additional questions they may submit a comment/question under the craft, so other members
may respond to assist.
2.2 In-Person Crafting
People are to meet in public event spaces or in member’s homes to work on a specific
(predetermined) craft. Members will be able to register for the events directly on the GCC’s
website. The cost to attend the event will be free or very minimal. If desired, food and beverages
will be offered at an additional charge, and/or members may bring their own food and drinks.
The user will be prompted to pay and answer if they plan on purchasing additional refreshments.
Members are responsible for reviewing what materials are necessary for the event on the
website, purchasing, and bringing them to these meetings. At the event, individuals that have
done the craft, or a similar craft, before may take the lead in demonstrating the different steps
necessary to complete the craft from start to finish. Paper and online copies of the crafting steps
are also to be available to help members follow along that can be printed directly from the
website beforehand. These leading members may also provide artistic opinions and
recommendations to other members participating during the event and address any unanswered
questions about the craft that had been previously posted on the website.
3. Why Choose Garced’s Craft Corner
Crafting is a hobby that many people enjoy, but the current online learning options in the
Frederick Community are limited and the in-person events can get expensive for a variety of
reasons. GCC allows members of the FC community more flexible options to learn from
someone they can relate to (as fellow FC residents), and spend time on money on only what they
would like to.
6|Page
GCC CONOP
3.1 A Sense of Community
Limiting members to GCC website and holding events primarily in Frederick County helps
encourage a sense of belonging. People may know each other from other Frederick County
organizations or their kids may be in the same school or sports program. These commonalities
among members build understanding and potentially new relationships/friendships. These
commonalities are important and can encourage people to feel more comfortable asking
questions and receiving feedback vs being an anonymous person searching the Web or an App
for answers and clarification.
3.2 Save Time and Money
Being a member of GCC allows more flexibility in how much you want to spend. For online/athome and in-person crafting options, members only need to spend money on materials for the
crafts they want to do without a limitation to which vendor to buy from. One member might
decide to spend a little more on materials vs another that who may choose cheaper options
because it satisfies their needs. Having online/at-home resources learning materials allows
members to save travel time, gas money, and possibly babysitting fees to reach an event.
Attending in-person events themselves has the potential to be very cheap because the goal is to
educate, not profit. Purchasing additional commodities such as beverages and food are not
combined with attending fees. Refreshment fees are completely optional. This flexibility allows
all members to spend as little or as much as they want.
4. Functions and Capabilities of Garced’s Craft Corner
Future users must register to become a GCC members. Once members are registered they use a
unique login user name and password. Once members log in, members of GCC use the
navigation toolbar members access different sections of the website to share craft deas, select
crafts from a variety of criteria such as themes, materials, etc, access crafting instructions manual
and video formats, and register for future crafting events.
4.1 Creating a Membership
Users must register to become a member of the website before they can access any of the
website’s content. This is to ensure there are methods to notify the members and confirm
registrants are residents of Frederick County. On the website’s landing page the user is asked to
register to become a member. The logo and tag of the website will be on the landing page, so
potential future members can use this information to decide if they would like to sign up. Once
the membership form is submitted the registrant receives a confirmation email.
7|Page
GCC CONOP
4.2 Creating a Login
Creating a login and logging is done on the homepage of the website. Once registrants are
approved members create a log-in. The login requires a unique username and password to be
entered. Once the unique login information is saved the user receives a confirmation email that
their login has been verified and they can now log into the website.
4.3 Sharing Craft Ideas
Members are to upload craft projects to the website via text, documents (.doc, .docs, .pdf),
images (.jpg, .png), and videos (.mp4) that they would like to share with the rest of the members.
These crafts may be self-designed or from other sources (cited appropriately). Once a new craft
idea is uploaded Alexandra Garced (creator) will receive a notification. The craft is assessed to
determine if the project is suited for the website. If approved corresponding instructions are to be
uploaded to the website. Members who upload also will receive an email that their upload was
received.
4.4 Craft Instructions
The website allows craft instructions in a combination of formats. Website content include text,
documents (.doc, .docs, .pdf), images (.jpg, .png), and videos (.mp4). Each of the instructions
contains hyperlinks to purchase materials. All instructions are titled, assigned a required
materials list, categorized with keywords, theme(s), and total price range cost to assist with craft
with member craft selection. Members may subscribe to specific keywords, so they are notified
when a new craft has been posted. Subscribers are to receive a notification via email.
4.5 Craft Selection
Members are able to search for crafts via a keyword search engine and a selection of filters.
Upon final selection of craft(s) the member may print any instructions and/or watch instructional
videos directly from the website.
4.5.1 Key Word Search
Members enter keywords into a keyword search to assist in the selection of a craft project. The
keyword search finds all crafts that correspond to the title, theme, and materials of a craft. For
example, if a member entered “Pumpkin” in the search results all crafts with “Pumpkin” in the
title, theme, or used as material are included in the results.
8|Page
GCC CONOP
4.5.2 Filter Options
Search filter options based on materials, themes, and total price cost are to be available to be
used individually or simultaneously when searching for crafts. For example, referring to section
4.5.1 above, if a member entered “Pumpkin” into the keyword search and used the filter material
selecting “Styrofoam” this ensures crafts primarily using clay are not included in the final search
results. Additionally, using the total price filter a member may enter “Below $50” ensuring all
crafts that cost over $50 are excluded from the final search results.
4.6 Questions and Feedback
After selecting a craft to work on members may get confused on a certain step and may need
help and/or would like feedback from other community members. Members are able to post
questions about each craft to receive feedback/assistance from other members.
4.6.1 Questions
Members post questions and comments about a craft. This is available on the craft instructions
page. These questions and comments may include text, documents (.doc, .docs, .pdf), images
(.jpg, .png), and videos (.mp4); whichever method they prefer to address their concerns.
Members may subscribe to specific keywords in questions, so they are notified when a new
comment/question has been posted. Subscribers are to receive a notification via email.
4.6.2 Feedback
Once a question and/or comment is posted members may reply with text, documents (.doc, .docs,
.pdf), images (.jpg, .png), and videos (.mp4); whichever method they prefer to assist their fellow
craft member. Members may choose to receive email notifications when another member has
replied to one of their comments.
4.7 Organizing/Scheduling Events
Members are able to sign up for events that will be held every other month. If a member would
like to sign up for an event they would fill out their contact information, determine if they would
more than likely be purchasing refreshments, and pay a fee (if applicable). Once registered for
the event the member receives a notification email of registration confirmation that contains the
confirmation number, craft title, documented craft instructions, and location information of the
event. The confirmation email is to have an option to add the event to the user’s personal
calendar of choice.

6. Analysis of Garced’s Craft Corner
This section describes the advantages and disadvantages of using GCC instead of similar
systems.
6.1 Advantages of GCC
The two prominent advantages of using GCC is the exclusivity of learning from FCCM and the
confirmations all craft information is accurate.
6.1.1 Frederick County Community Members Only
All GCC members are FCCM. The exclusivity of the member group ensures members
that users have been reviewed before joining the GCC community. When users ask for
feedback they know they are asking a fellow community member.
6.1.2 Crafts Selection & Instructions
All crafts are reviewed before being posted on GCC. GCC members can be certain that
the crafts posted have been tested and can be accomplished with the instructions and
materials list provided.
6.2 Disadvantages of GCC
The two prominent disadvantages of using GCC is cross-posting is not permitted and all user
interface must be done through a web browser.
6.2.1 No Cross-Posting
GCC Members may want to share their crafts from GCC directly on other website platforms.
Due to the functions and capabilities, this was intentionally omitted, because feedback should
come from GCC members only. There is nothing preventing members from sharing their craft
accomplishments on different websites/social media platforms, but it must be done outside of
GCC. Many individuals like posting on all/some of their social media platforms all at once and
could find this discouraging.
12 | P a g e
GCC CONOP
6.2.2 Browser vs App
All browsing, selection, and member feedback for crafts must be done through a web browser.
There is no GCC phone app. Individuals may prefer a phone app instead of using a web browser.
Users may prefer an app interface and/or may prefer a phone notification instead of email
subscriptions when new crafts or feedback has been posted. GCC as a phone app may be
considered in a future upgrade to GCC.
7. Impact of Garced’s Craft Corner on Frederick County Community
Overall, members of GCC are going to be more educated in a variety of crafts. Other companies
that hold similar crafting events could have lower or higher attendance rates at their craft events.
Frederick County craft stores may see an increase in sales.
7.1 Craft Education
As GCC members learn more crafts and share ideas amongst one another they will learn new
skills. These new skills may vary from using different crafting tools and/or using different types
of crafting materials. The variety of craft options on GCC may encourage members to complete
crafts they may have been intimidated to try on their own, but with member feedback and
guidance are more comfortable trying something new.
7.2 Other Craft Event Attendance Rates
GCC members may feel discouraged to attend other events, because of the difference in cost.
The other option may be they feel encouraged to attend events outside of GCC because they
want to attend as many in-person events as possible. Members who prioritize saving time and
money probably would skip other in-person events held outside of GCC, because of the mark-up
in prices for materials and refreshments. Members who have more free time and extra money to
spend might feel inspired to learn even more from different sources, so they could attend more
events that they normally would not have before joining GCC.
7.3 Craft Material Item Sales
GCC members that shop locally would buy their craft materials at local craft stores and other
retail companies. This could lead to an increase in sales of crafting items that would profit the
local Frederick County economy. Depending on the number of members GCC accumulates
would correlate to the impact of sales in the Frederick County community.
