Solve the following problems from your Excel textbook answering all questions required for each problem.
Problems are found at the end of each chapter.

Chapter 1: Fluid Statics application, and problems 1.3, 1.5

Chapter 2: Loan Amortization Table application, and problems 2.3, 2.4

Chapter 3: Material Testing application, and problems 3.3, 3.4, 3.7, 3.8, 3.9, 3.10

Chapter 4: Statics application-Resolving Forces, and problems 4.3, 4.5, 4.8, 4.9, 4.12

Mandatory Homework

1. The velocity (u) of a non-Newtonian fluid flowing in a circular pipe can be expressed as:

𝑒(π‘Ÿ)
𝑒

=
3𝑛 + 1
𝑛 + 1

1 βˆ’
π‘Ÿ
𝑅

Where 𝑒 is the mean velocity of the fluid, r is radial distance from the center of the pipe, R is the pipe
radius, and n is a constant whose value depends on the fluid (for example, n = 1 for a Newtonian fluid, n = 3
for a dilatant fluid).

For 𝑒 = 10 ft/s and 𝑅 = 5”, plot 𝑒(π‘Ÿ) for a Newtonian fluid and for a dilatant fluid. Compare the
two profiles in the same plot.

2. Data shows population in US for several years.

a) Based on the data given, propose different mathematical models to predict future population in an
Excel graph (use linear, polynomial, exponential, and/or others trendlines) and determine predicted
population in year 2020 with each model.
b) What model would you select for predicting population for future years?

Year
Population
(103)
1880 15
1890 20
1900 25
1910 32
1920 40
1930 47.5
1940 58.8
1950 67.8
1960 78
1970 83.4
1980 91.8
1990 96.6
2000 103.2
