Marketing Internship at XXX

Week 1

Tuesday, August 20th, 2013 – August 22th, 2013

My supervisors, Jonathan and Ryan , introduced me to all my fellow co-workers and they also gave me a good description of what types of things they’ve been working on. This week was important for me to get to know everybody, and understand what exactly I’m going to be doing for throughout the next few months. I will be responsible for creating accurate spreadsheets of prospective client data and manage leads database, assisting in business development activities, collaborating with the Product Management Team to ensure timeliness and quality of work to clients, representing XXX to all existing contacts to best create a positive brand and generate interest through ‘word of mouth’ marketing strategies. I’m very excited and motivated for this new challenge in my life, especially after been invited by my supervisors for a welcome dinner at Cheesecake Factory.

Week 2

Monday, August 26th, 2013 – August 29th, 2013

This was my second week working for XXX and I’m loving everything! I’ve been watching my co-workers how to make cold calls, once I will start executing this type of task very soon. The company wants to make sure I’m totally comfortable talking to customers and being able to do a great job on promoting the company’s services. The environment of the team is very good and I like the fact that everybody get along pretty well; sometimes we all go have lunch together and I like getting to know people better. I’ve been doing a lot of research on potential customers through a few different websites (LinkedIn is one of them), and creating many different spreadsheets on Excel with all the details about people and companies. This is the very first step before I go into cold calls. I have to be good at researching the right people in order to make cold calls! XXX provides translations services, interpretation services, remote/over the phone interpretation, linguistic validation, transcription, typesetting and graphics, multicultural marketing, voiceovers and dubbing, subtitling, staffing solutions, legal services, and virtual data room services. Due to the fact that our company offers so many different services, they want to make sure I’m 100% confident and aware of the company’s services before I try to sell them through cold calls.

Week 3

Tuesday, September 3rd, 2013 –September 5th, 2013

Even though this was a short week due to Labor Day, I was assigned by the Director Business Development of XXX, Semih, to help him with a important project that involves over $40,000. My goal in this task is to make sure that the numbers are matching up in the balance sheet, once we are dealing with a lot of professional translators from all over the world and each one of them charges a different price for their service. Semih gave me permission to call the professional translators whenever I want because I have to make sure they will get the work done on time. I’m excited to have a little bit of power on my hands and being able to manage people in a certain way. Other than this project, I’ve been still watching my co-workers cold calling potential customers and learning some marketing techniques to persuade them. I’ve been doing a lot of research on potential customers, and I like that because I get to know a lot about many companies in terms of numbers.

Week 4

Monday, September 9th, 2013 –September 13rd, 2013

This week was interesting for me because I started to answer calls and directing them to the right people in the office. There are approximately 15 people working in the office and it is hard remember everyone’s name and extension, but I’ve been doing a good job so far! I think that the more interaction with customers the better for me and answering phone calls is another way to improve my communication skills!

Week 5

Monday, September 16th, 2013 –September 20th, 2013

This was a good week… I had the chance to meet and talk to the Vice President of Business Development of XXX, Michel Eduardo. I started to get more confident with phone calls, and I’ve been enjoying sending e-mails to potential customers. Being able to interact with them on my own is great! I usually send 100 e-mails per day and this has helped me with my communications and marketing approach skills!

Week 6

Monday, September 23rd, 2013 –September 27th, 2013

Great week! I received a call from the vice president of the company, Tim, he wants me to help him and Dani, Director of Strategic Accounts, to find important contacts from Marriott International, Inc. They came up with a list of over 700 contacts from this company, and my task is to delete contacts that are not relevant, find their e-mails, telephone, and address. I’m excited and happy to start working on this new project!

Week 7

Monday, September 30th, 2013 –October 4th, 2013

After dedicating almost 100% of my time at work on this project, I came up with a list of 317 contacts from Marriott International, Inc. These contacts are very important for their company, XXX will try to get a partnership with Marriot International, Inc. pretty soon. My colleagues will be sending e-mails and actually calling the contacts that I came up on the excel spreadsheet, and they will try to schedule a big meeting. We will be taking care of Marriot’s official website translations to any language they want! If everything goes right… I will be happy I was part of the deal!

Week 8

Monday, October 7th, 2013 –October 11th, 2013

A big part of my day at XXX is to seek for potential companies that have need for translations. I basically send 6 company names to our Sales Research team and they come up with big lists with employers and employees from the requested companies. After that, I have to filter what contacts are good and bad, find their position in the company (title) e-mail address, mail address, and telephone number. Once I create this nice spreadsheet, I send it to our Sales Force team, which works exclusively by uploading contacts into

www.salesforce.com

. Once the contacts are all uploaded in the website, I’m able to send hundreds of e-mails to different companies everyday! That’s what I pretty much did every single day of the week! I ended up getting a good amount of responses. And now I can actually follow all the process of convincing the client to close a deal with our company…which is the fun part! I have not started cold calling people yet…so I’ve been following my supervisors doing this part of the job…and I’ve been learning a lot of good techniques!

Week 9

Monday, October 14th, 2013 –October 18th, 2013

I had an amazing week… probably the best one so far! Working very hard each day of the week, being creative and asking as many questions as possible to have a better understanding on how this company works, has paid off! I was named the 3rd most effective intern at XXX. I got the news through e-mail and I’m very excited! The company has offices all over the world, which makes me feel even better! My supervisor finally gave me permission to cold call potential clients. I’m not ready yet, but I will be working hard in the next few weeks to feel more comfortable talking about our service!

Week 10

Monday, October 21st, 2013 –October 25th, 2013

This week was very important for me… My supervisor received an e-mail from one of the vice presidents of XXX, asking if I was willing to stay with the company after graduating. I said to my supervisor that I would love to stay with the company if they are willing to hire me to work as a Project Manager or Sales and Marketing Representative; he thinks I have pretty good chances to receive an offer from the company before my graduation!

I’m going to keep working hard every day and the results will automatically show up! I’m currently working on finding prospect clients from Trader Joe’s, Safeway, General Nutrition Centers, and others. I absolutely love Trader Joe’s and I usually go shopping at GNC once a month, so it will be interesting to have a better knowledge about those two companies! I’ve already been sending e-mails to Trader Joe’s employees, and I will definitely call a few of them next week to explain a little bit of our services and check if they have any need for translations.

Week 11

Monday, October 28th, 2013 –November 1st, 2013

I’m glad I’ve been receiving compliments from my supervisors. I don’t have as many tasks as my co-workers do, just because I’m a part-time intern, but I’m happy to do a pretty good job in whatever I’m required to do. This week was pretty demanding, I had to create several spreadsheets with over 1,000 contacts in each one of them. I’ve been sending hundreds of e-mails every day and we’ve had some good responses so far. I’ve been helping my supervisor, Jonathan , to find a list of the top companies that spent the most on advertising. If these companies have been spending money on radio and website banner advertising, they might want to consider on expand their company by translating their website to multiple languages and make it accessible to people globally, if they have needs.

Week 12

Monday, November 4th, 2013 –November 8th, 2013

I’ve been helping one of my supervisors, Jonathan , to find companies that might have needs make their website accessible to customers that either don’t speak English or the ones that live in a different country. I suggested to Jonathan that we could try to negotiate a mutual beneficial partnership with websites that develop/design websites. We could potentially have our logo on these websites, and for every client that ask for our service to translate websites, these companies would get a small percentage of the total cost for our service. I like the way my supervisors give me the opportunity to participate on their meetings and express my opinion and ideas.

Week 13

Monday, November 11st, 2013 –November 15th, 2013

This was an exciting week! I usually receive a list with dozens of companies from each one of my supervisors, and then I do my research and check the ones that have a good profile to be our client. But, I gained permission to come up with a list of companies by myself, and I’ve been very creative with this opportunity! I approached a few chocolate factories, marketing design websites, and even international sports league, such as ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals). I had one scheduled call with the Associate Director of Publishing and Printing of NCAA and it went pretty well. My supervisor, Jonathan, was leading the conversation and I was basically learning all his strategies to not only present our company to the client, but to convince her to have a partnership with us. Great week!

Week 14

Monday, November 18th, 2013 –November 22nd, 2013

I’m excited to see how XXX has been growing! We have offices not only all over the country, but all over the world! The vice president of the company came to the Chicago office to have a meeting with all of us, and one of the news is that we will be moving to a brand new office next year, twice as big as the one we currently work! Out office has 2 new employees, and they plan on hiring more people by next year. It’s good to work in a place where you actually see things evolving, and that makes me want to work for XXX after I graduate! I was busy as usual with lots of research, e-mails, and mailers.

Week 15

Monday, November 25th, 2013 –November 29th, 2013

Week off – Thanksgiving break
