This paper will compare and contrast Computers and Literacy. How two different authors think that computers effect the way we write today and have an impact on reading, writing and thinking today. Although both authors have more differences, I will descried views they both have in common. They both believe that computers are a good teaching aid and not a replacement for a teacher. Both authors also believe that a teacher will always have a place in the education system.

Even with computers new way of teaching. That offer so many different abilities to interoperate things to our generation. Now, I’ll describe how the two authors are different, starting with David Gelernter. That sees that computers could have a use, just not for reading and writing but, as a recess or relaxation tool. Gelernter also believes that.

We are becoming lazy, so to speak and that we depend on computers to not only to make work easier but take away the basics of writing. By saying ‘”computers lower reading skill” and that we are replacing “words with pictures and pictures with videos”. He has also said that we lacking in spelling due to spell check and we lost the benefits of reading and that books will become a dust bunny holders and not knowledge holders. As he goes on he points out that we lose more to multimedia because, even if they offer more appealing books to kids multimedia is guaranteed to make them think that reading will make their teeth fall out from reading. He ends his statements by saying “books are not only more portable than a computer, has a higher-resolution display and dirt cheap”.

When it comes to our second author Clive Thompson; he is in full support of how computers have made a change in the world of reading and writing. Emphasizing that even though people may or may not think that, “Facebook encourages narcissistic blabbering”, for the younger generations social media is the new letter writing and as a result it has improved our writing skills. These skills have improved because we use them not only to communicate but to express ourselves on a daily basis. Thompson also refers to a study done at Stanford University by an Andrea Lunsford, conducted over five years collecting 14,672 student writing samples. After the study was finished she concluded, “We are in the midst of a literacy revolution the likes of which we have not seen since Greek civilization”. She also stated that we write more now than any generation before us, because most American’s would not write unless it was their job. Before social media came along we left school and would most likely, never use or construct a paragraph again on a regular basis.

Although both authors had good points, I would have to side with Thomas on this subject. Not because of the fact that I am part of the younger generation but, I have a need to write more because of social media. I feel this way because before social media existed if we wanted to communicate, we would pick up a phone, fly or even get in a car and visit people, not write letters. With social media we have found a new common ground that challenges us not only on how to write and express ourselves but to comprehend what someone else is writing. Also that Gelernter did not prove his point in why they should not be a teaching aid. I hope you’ve enjoyed reading this comparison and contrast between Computer and Literacy.
