Hi Everyone,

There are key differences between revising and editing. The purpose of revision is to ensure that the content of a paper is focused, well structured, well organized, complete, and coherent. An example of revising is verifying that everything in your paper has relevant which means that the content relates to your thesis and to the assignment. Editing your paper provides clarity of language after you are confident that the content is complete or near complete. An example of editing a paper is when you modify the language in your paper to create the tone of the paper. Both revising and editing are essential in writing a successful essay or writing assignment.

Effective writing is typically done over many draft revisions. Therefore, it is important to schedule enough time to complete each task. To write better, Chapter 9 in Essentials of College Writing 2nd Edition (Connell & Cole, 2013), suggest that you give yourself breaks instead of doing a writing assignment in one sitting. Depending on the complexity of an assignment, you should allot for days, if not weeks, if the deadline allows so that you can properly develop your paper. Each task is equally important. However, the process of revision will take more time because the content of the paper is a much more complex task. The key to the time that is devoted is by understanding the assignment and outlining all the steps within the allotted deadline.

Part 1:

The text described revision as the process of rereading a draft, taking time to reflect upon it, and then making improvements to the material (Connell & Sole, 2013). Revising is focused more on the big picture view of a paper and how it is organized (Connell & Sole, 2013). Editing is described in the text as reviewing a paper for clarity of language (Connell & Sole, 2013). Editing has more to do with checking a paper for grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors. Sentence structure should also be assessed in the editing step.

Part 2:

During the revision process, a writer will make sure the paper is focused, well-structured and organized, directly responds to and meets the requirements of the prompt, and includes enough evidence to support the main idea of the paper (Connell & Sole, 2013). A writer should also check to ensure that each paragraph is relevant to the purpose of the paper and should ensure that the connections between ideas are clear to the reader. As mentioned in the text, a writer will check for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure errors during the editing process (Connell & Sole, 2013). Tools such as Grammarly are a useful tool while performing this step of the editing process. While writing college papers, a writer should also check to ensure that the tone of the paper matches the appropriate writing style requirements of the assignment, such as personal, persuasive, argumentative, or expository genres.

Part 3:

The amount of time spent on each step is dependent on several factors, such as the length of the paper and the requirements. A writer should consider repeating each step in the process several times until he or she is confident in the quality of work produced. The revision and editing process could take a matter of days or even a full week. The text described it best when giving the comparison that revising and editing is more like a marathon than a sprint (Connell & Sole, 2013).

Part 4:

The text offered some good recommendations on different ways to conduct the proofreading step. The first recommendation listed was reading out loud to yourself. That one works best for me. Which one works best for you and why?
