He Was Soccer Player

Soccer has always been an integral part of his life. Once he tried to remember a single day totally away from the pitch, either indoor or outdoor, and he could not. It seemed to him that he had started playing soccer the day he was born. This unpretentious sports game became his hobby, favorite pastime, obsession, and almost the meaning of all his life. The people who know him have always been amazed at how strong the passion can be.

He was a common schoolboy who liked History and Math and longed for breaks and holidays. However, there has always been one thing that made him different from the children of his age. That was his absolute love of soccer. Everybody knew him as a boy with a football. He tried to spend every spare minute practicing and playing. He enjoyed watching matches on TV and could spend hours listening to his dad who knew hundreds of stories about famous soccer players from different countries. Both of them were always looking forward to the weekends when they could play in the yard and feel how close they were to each other,

When he was only Ten years old, he was offered to play for Al-Arabi soccer team in Kuwait. It was the greatest happiness he could fancy. Besides, it was a source of pride for him and his parents. The selection of players at the national level was known to be very strict, but he was accepted without any objection. Very early, he had to realize that soccer is not only fun and joy. It requires dedication and hard work.

He used to be an individualist with few friends and acquaintances. Soccer turned his life upside down. Being a part of the Al-Arabi soccer team, he learnt what it meant to be committed to a team. Sport taught him the basics of teamwork and mutual supportiveness. It showed him the importance of sharing and taking into consideration other people’s wishes and needs.

He did not even realize the scope of the pressure on him. During Eight years of playing for the Al-Arabi soccer team, he had always been pressed for time. He was a teenager when it occurred to him that it was almost impossible to squeeze all the things to do in the framework of twenty four hours. Nevertheless, he managed to combine playing soccer at the professional level, enjoying weekend matches with his friends and neighbors and studying at school. He never compromised on the quality of his assignments or the general performance. Soccer inspired him to learn, as it is a kind of game one cannot play without analytical thinking.

School time was really tough for him. He never got a permission to skip some lesson or test because of the important match that day. He had to do resolve all school issues first, and only after that he was free to delve into his world of soccer. Later, he understood that it was soccer that made him a disciplined person. He learnt how to make best use of his spare time and manage it properly. He balanced his social life, responsibilities, household chores, home assignments, even part-time jobs with playing soccer. He could not be disloyal to his school, so he even joined the school soccer team and became their captain.

They told that he controlled the ball with outstanding grace and speed. So, when he was playing, there were dozens of those who wanted at least to watch, if not take part in the game. His passion was contagious and the majority of boys in his school and neighborhood were into soccer in a short while. He had built discipline which carried over into the other spheres of life. He realized how demanding sport was. So, he was ready to improve his skills, learn something new and meet challenges. He was always respectful to his team leaders and coaches and was willing to accept their instructions, advice and directions.

When it was time for him to choose what to do after his high school, he was not hesitating. He had always dreamt to go to the US and try his luck there. So, he is studying at the university in Fullerton, California. He does not have time to play soccer at the professional level, but every week he plays with his friend and remembers the times when people of his country were supporting him in important matches. He has witnessed and experienced tears, blood and sweat. He has been playing soccer for years and remembers his tears of joy and frustration streaming down his face. Many a time, he has knelt on the ground with a look of disbelief and despair but always managed to pull himself up and go on. He knows also what a person feels when he is running with the arms spread wide because he has scored the most important goal and his team has won. The only thing that seemed hard for him was to learn how to deal with losing. However, he found the way to benefit even fro his losses.
