Activity 6: Public Policy Essay
Step A: Background Information
1. Define the Problem
The goal is to understand why there is a problem.
Break the problem into pieces if it is too complex to solve at all at once.
2. Look at Potential Causes for the Problem
3. Identify Alternatives for Approaches to Resolve the Problem
Brainstorm for solutions to the problem.
Collect as many solutions to the problem as possible.
4. Select an Approach to Resolve the Problem
What approach will solve the problem?
Will the approach solve the problem in both the short and long-term?
Is the approach feasible?
Is the approach realistic?
5. Plan the Implementation of the Best Alternative (devise an “Action Plan”)
Develop steps to implement the approach you selected.
What people and what things will be needed to implement your approach?
6. Monitor the Implementation of the Plan
Is the plan working?
If your plan is not working then you need to start asking yourself why.
7. Verify if the Problem has been Resolved
Did you solve the problem?
If not, then maybe another course of action would work better?

Look through the newspaper and find a public policy issue that is currently affecting your community, state,
or nation. You may use the local newspaper or any reputable newspaper online (links to news sources are on
the front page of the blog). I advise every student to choose an issue that they care about. If you are having
trouble finding an issue that you care about please seek guidance from a teacher.
Step C: The Problem Solving Process
Analyze the issue (problem) affecting your community by walking through the steps detailed above. On a
sheet of lined paper address each step. After you have successfully walked through all of the steps on a lined
sheet of paper write a one page essay on your issue. In other words, you will be summarizing your initial
work of walking through the problem solving steps.
