Patients surf the Web, watch TV, and are becoming better informed about health issues. Clinicians are so busy in the workplace, it is almost impossible to stop for inservices and budgets are so tight it is hard to send them to seminars. How can clinicians stay current with the latest research? Why is staying current so important?

Clinicians can stay current with the latest research through continuing medical educations (CMEs). CMEs are educational activities to assist with maintaining, developing, or increasing the knowledge, skills and professional performance for health care professionals (ACCME, n.d.). Many hospitals and health systems hold free in-services for their medical staff and associated clinicians that are educational and approved for CME credit. This could be patient care management, a specialty service, educational material for teaching physicians, new medication, coding, empathic listening, and motivational interviewing.
In my professional experience, my organization would hold “Lunch and Learn” webinars during the lunch time hour. These thirty-minute webinars were put on for our employed physicians and advanced practitioners in the medical group, and one of their colleagues would give a fifteen to twenty-minute in-service with a ten to fifteen-minute question and answer session following. These kept physicians engaged. The content was not only something that pertained to improve patient care, but it was presented by a colleague who understood the current challenges or desired knowledge that the medical group providers wanted to know about. Other ways for clinicians to keep current is to subscribe to medical journals. Many medical journals have CMEs available simply by answering questions about the articles published in the current journal.

With new advances in treatments, drugs, and technology, it is important for clinicians to stay update with the new information. Physicians have busy schedules being in clinic, being in call in hospitals and personal life, that there is hardly any time to become familiar with what is new in the medical field. In order for clinicians to provide the best treatment and quality of care it is important to keep abreast of the new developments. According to Elkhodr, there are some techniques that doctors can use to stay up-to-date. These techniques include, learning from colleagues, sponsored meetings, eLearning, print media, short- term clinical assistant posts, and medical paralegals (Elkhodr, 2017). Finding the time for doctors and medical staff to learn and stay current with the latest research, can be the game changer to better treat patients. The only way to grow as medical providers is by gaining knowledge.

As a clinician, I am ofen bombarded with CEU’s that need to be done, hospital education modules, and the every day workload of patient care. The best way I have found to stay current, is to be engaged in the department, in my case the OR. Technology is fast moving and is changing almost daily. If you are constantly putting technology to work then one stays up to date. It is important to stay relevant in your field, for if you are not relevant, then you are probably unemployed. The best way to utilize technology is by doing CEU’s online, updating procedural techniques as technology advances, and using telemedicine to educate patients at home before procedures.
