Technical Description

Homework

Overview
A technical description provides concrete details, precise words, and visuals to show readers what an object, mechanism, or product looks like, how it is put together, and/or how it works. Some technical descriptions detail processes instead of objects—for example, how a customer’s credit card is processed online by a hotel’s website. Composing technical descriptions, however, requires writer to recognize audience needs and expectations as well as pay careful attention to language use. In most cases, audiences need to know answer to one or more of the following questions:
· What is it?
· What does it look like?
· What does it do?
· What is it made of?
· How does it work?
· How has it been put together?

Guidelines
Choose an object that is located near you at the moment: a pen, a cell phone, a book, a beer keg, etc. Using sensory detail, write a complete description of this object. Focus only on its parts and its characteristics, rather than on what the thing does or is used for. You should consult the list of characteristics in Chapter 16 of TCTC to help you decide which aspects are most important. In fact, in order to have success on this assignment, you’re going to need a good understanding of Ch. 16, so make sure you read it carefully before you start writing.
Let us be clear that this is a Homework assignment and not one of your major papers. By the end of the module, you need to submit your final homework assignment to the assignment dropbox. This is a Description assignment, so it should be titled LastnameDescription

Requirements
· Approximately 350-550 words
· Include your name, date, and course in the top left corner of the document
· Use the object as the title of the document (i.e. Nintendo Wii Controller)
· After your description, place a bullet list of the different criteria you used to describe your object (see page 478 of Ch. 16 in TCTC for help with this)

Evaluation
The experience of writing a technical definition is what’s important in this assignment, so you’ll receive full credit as long as you meet the expectations listed below:
· Fulfill the requirements listed above
· Demonstrate that you’ve put thought and effort into this assignment
· Demonstrate that you have organized the material with the end-user in mind (i.e. the info is accessible for anyone trying to use this technical definition)
· The description is clear and grammatically correct.
· The overall document is visually effective

EXAMPLE 01

This changes everything. Again.

The cell phone is one of the most revolutionary products of the 21st century, though; the iPhone 4 is much more that a regular phone, it will have a lasting impact on the way we connect with each other. For 2010, the phone 4 is the biggest leap forward since the original iPhone.

Button Basics

Apple spends a tremendous amount of time focusing its attention to detail. As you can see, there are only four buttons and one switch on the entire cell phone. On the top of the iPhone 4, the On/Off, Sleep/Wake button can be located; this is an elongated oval shaped button that is easy to press. On the upper left, the Ring/Silent switch and Volume Up/Down buttons can be found. The orange indicator is displayed when the Ring/Silent switch is in its silent position. The Volume Up/Down Buttons are indicated by plus and minus sins.

Go Home

The Home button is conveniently located at the bottom, and in the middle of the face of the iPhone 4. The indented half sphere allows the finger to effortlessly fall in place.

Finish

All of the technology in iPhone 4 is positioned between two sleek panels of aluminosilicate glass; the same type of glass used in the windshields of high-speed trains and helicopters. This glass is chemically strengthened to be 30 times harder and 20 times stiffer than plastic.

Display

The 960 by 640 backlit LCD display features a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch. Apple engineers developed pixels so small, at a mere 78 micrometers across, the human eye cannot differentiate individual pixels.

Texture

Created from Apples own alloy, then fashioned to be five times stronger than steel, the machined band is the mounting point for all the components of iPhone 4. This band provides remarkable structural stringency and is aesthetically pleasing at the same time.

Photography

The iPhone 4 is the only phone on the market that has two cameras. The rear 5.0 megapixel camera is positioned adjacent to the in LED flash. The second camera, or the forward facing camera, is located to the left of the speaker on the face of the phone.

Sound

While most phones have only one microphone, the iPhone 4 has two. The main mic is located on the bottom next to the dock connector. The second mic is built into the top near the headphone jack. There are also two built in speakers. One, located at the top center of the face of the phone, and the second, is located to the left of the dock connector.

The innovative technology behind the iPhone 4 is all contained in a beautiful enclosure that is a mere 9.3 millimeters thin, making iPhone 4 the world’s thinnest Smartphone. 

*NOTICE, I would have put this at the upper left hand corner as the assignment instructions indicated, but I felt as though it took away from the looks of my technical description.

EXAMPLE 02

Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant Phone

The Samsung Vibrant Galaxy S phone is a cellular phone which comes with a pre-installed Android operating system. The phone functions like a regular cell phone, but that is only its most basic feature. It comes with a great number of other features such as Web Browsing, Instant messaging, Music player and a 5- megapixel camera.

The Vibrant is one of the slimmest phones on the market

Dimensions: 4.82*2.54*.39 (inches)

Weight: 4.16 oz.

Color: Black

Screen: 100 mm covered by a crack and scratch resistant glass called Gorilla Glass.

What are its parts?

The basic assembly of the phone consists of a cover case, a 3.7 lithium ion battery, a SIM card reader and a memory card holder. The more advanced assembly inside the phone consists of a motherboard (which consists of the operating system and wires, which connect the various parts of the phone to the mother board so that the functions can be carried out). Most of the body is made of plastic and fiberglass, which makes it light and sturdy at the same time.

How it works?

The 3.7 volt battery is to be inserted into the battery slot at the back of the phone. Once the battery is inserted, the thinner end of the phone charger (provided upon purchase) needs to be inserted into the charging slot located at the top of the phone. The charge is stored in the battery in the form of Direct current and this stored current is used to run the phone and its parts. The applications the phone uses derive their power from this stored charge.Once the stored charge in the battery runs out, it needs to be charged again.

To use the device as a phone, a SIM card needs to be inserted into the SIM card slot located right above the battery slot. If the phone is on then the receivers located which convert Analogue signals to Digital signals (like a radio) and transmit information. This information gets reflected from ions in the atmosphere and is received by a similar device. Most other features including E-Mail and Text messaging also function the same way.

What are some of its features?

In addition to being a touch screen phone, it can also be used as a quick way to check e-mails, surf the internet and transfer information via Bluetooth. It runs on two powerful microprocessors. A lot many games and applications such as calculators, file managers, a PDF reader and GPS systems can also be put onto the device. Thus the number of functions it can carry out makes it more than a simple phone.

How is it put together?

The Central Processor is arranged with a main motherboard which consists of two microprocessors, which are responsible for all the functions the phone carries out. A separate slot for the phone’s memory and power are also incorporated into the same motherboard. Depending on the program each of these parts are used. A protective covering is put on the main motherboard and on this covering, a slot for the battery, SIM card and memory card is provided. Finally another covering is placed over this assembly and the phone is ready for use.

EXAMPLE 03

Water Bottle

This object is a sealed container designed to hold water or any other cold liquid and maintain its temperature while still giving access to it for drinking.

Major Components

· Black plastic cap with nozzle

· Silver metallic container

· Black plastic base

Plastic Cap

The cap sits secured to the top of the container and has a slightly rough feel to the touch. It is shaped like a cylinder of about 2 inches in diameter and 1.5 inches long. At about mid-length, it has a rounded edge wrapped around its circumference leading to a slight decrease in diameter from bottom to top.

The cap is hollowed out on the inside and has small, spiraling protrusions wrapping around the inner circumference that match the shape of the top of the container.

On the flat surface on top of the cap, there is a small cut in the plastic that gives room for the cone-shaped end of a semi-opaque rubber valve to poke through. While drinking from the container, this valve creates a bubbling suction sound similar to that of a disinflating balloon.

Just opposite of the rubber valve is a cylindrical nozzle with a smoother touch than the rest of the cap. The nozzle has a diameter and length of about 0.75 inches, and it engulfs another cylinder of smaller diameter that is fixed to a couple of disk-shaped protrusions on top of the cap. The nozzle opens and closes with little friction while making a light rubbing sound.

Although not intentional, the cap also has a large semicircular gap lengthwise from its base extending to just underneath the rounded edge due to a piece that broke off. The edge of this broken gap has a jagged and rough feel to it.

Metallic Container

The main container is a silver, semi-reflecting cylindrical tube with a smooth, cool feel to the touch. It measures about 9 inches tall and 2 inches in diameter and is hollow throughout its entire length.

On the top and bottom, it has rounded edges wrapping around its circumference leading to areas of smaller diameter that fit underneath the shapes of the top cap and bottom base. Both of these areas also have small spiraling protrusions around the circumference that match the inner spirals on the cap and base.

With liquid inside the container, any movement creates a splashing sound with a slight metallic ring. Tapping on the container causes it to resonate with a definite tone that changes pitch depending on how much liquid is inside the container.

Plastic Base

The base is secured underneath the container and has the same rough feel as the cap. It is also cylindrical with a diameter of 2 inches, but with a length of only about 0.5 inches. Like the cap, it is hollowed out on the inside and has spiraling protrusions wrapping around its inner circumference that match the spirals of the container.

On the flat underside of the base, there is a circular area of the same color with a smoother, more reflective appearance that contains protruded text wrapped around parallel to the circle. The text includes the manufacturer’s address information, the brand name, and the capacity of the container by volume.

EXAMPLE 04

Fishing Pole

General

An object that is located near me is a Tiger Shakespeare fishing pole, which is used for salt water fishing. The fishing pole is made up of three components the rod, reel, and fishing line. The rod is separated into two sections, and has the reel attached to the bottom section.

Rod

The rod is a round four foot long pole with a black and white paint scheme. On the bottom section of the pole there is a rubber grip that allows the fishermen to handle the pole. It is made up of fiber glass material for flexibility, and weighs one pound. On the side that the reel is on, are looped holes that run up the pole. String is run through the holes from the reel. As the rod gets closer to the top of the pole the looped holes and rod gets smaller in circumference.

Reel

The reel is made up of a metal material that is colored black and consists of ball bearings, a shaft, and a round top that holds the fishing line. The shaft is directly connected to a handle that the fisherman spins; as the handle spins, gears are spun which spins the rotor sitting on top of the ball bearings. The spinning of the rotor causes the fishing line to wrap around the top of the reel which holds the line. There is a locking mechanism that can be either locked or unlocked. Locking the system only allows the fishing line to be wrapped around the top of the reel which holds the line. This is done when you are reeling in a fish or checking your bait. However, if the system is unlocked, fishing line is allowed to leave the reel. This would be done when casting.

Fishing Line

There can be a number of different fishing lines used with the fishing pole. The primary weight of the string is any weighing between eight and fifteen pound test line. At the end of the line weights, hooks, and metal wire can be added on.

EXAMPLE 05

Logitech Computer Mouse

Introduction

The Logitech Performance MX Mouse is a peripheral hardware component designed to comfortably complement the contours of the human hand. With seven fully programmable buttons and a dual axis scroll wheel, the mouse fully meets the demands of any avid computer user.

Spanning five inches long, three inches wide, and two inches high, the mouse has enough weight to feel solid, yet its agility allows the user to efficiently move the body across any smooth surface. The sophisticated modern color scheme harmonizes with virtually any computer environment.

Mid-Mouse

The outer mouse shell is primarily composed of quality plastics covered with a dark grey matte finish. At the pinnacle of the mouse body, the shell splits at a downward slope forming the two primary keys. Pressing the plastic key gently results in contact with the interior switch, creating a defined audible click.

A scrolling wheel lies between the two buttons an inch behind the front edge. The wheel’s circumference is coated with ridged rubber for effective contact with the fingertip; however, the walls of the wheel are stainless steel to prevent other fingers from accidentally interfering with rotation. In addition to spinning, the wheel can be tilted away from the z-axis; this allows horizontal scrolling. The wheel can also be pushed vertically to serve as a middle button. A black toggle button behind the wheel adjusts the spinning rate. When the toggle button is pressed, internal gears are dampened to permit more sensitive scrolling. Continuous hyper scrolling is enabled when the toggle button is retracted.

Left-Mouse Functionality

On the left side of the mouse, an ergonomic, black rubber groove hides a thumb button. The rubber contains approximately 40 small dimples per square inch to permit comfortable airflow. A second button exists slightly above the groove, thus allowing the thumb to effortlessly reach both positions. The rubber is highlighted by an alluring outline of polished aluminum. Forward and back arrow keys protrude from the aluminum, and a battery indicator, comprised of 3 green LEDs, is located a half-inch behind the arrow keys.

Underlying Components

While the right side of the mouse merely contains a static rubber grip, the bottom features key operational components. In the middle, a Darkfield Sensor detects mouse movement without emitting visible light. The on-switch is located next to it enabling wireless transmission. The battery plate is located below the switch. Upon compressing the plate, a slot is revealed containing a single nickel-metal hydride battery. Three skid plates surround the edges of the mouse. They minimize friction and help prevent scratches to the working surface.

Front Plate

The front rises a half inch from the base of the mouse. It contains a mini-USB connection where the unit can be plugged in for charging.

Conclusion

The Logitech Performance MX Mouse has the functionality of a gaming mouse, yet it is styled and constructed to suit the professional workplace.
