Constructing and developing your professional portfolio (ePortfolio)

Keeping a professional portfolio will assist with your graduate transition and future career planning, as well as the ongoing development and monitoring of your professional learning goals and needs. After you have completed assessment 1 and 2 for this subject, you will have created your own professional e-portfolio.

Assessment 1

Task: Decide upon and implement a design and structure for your professional portfolio and explain why you chose to structure your portfolio in this way. Using the RN Professional Portfolio (in Chalk and Wire):

· Develop a front page (i.e. the Home page) for your portfolio

· Create a structure for the pages of your portfolio (using the add page function)

· Complete the portfolio rationale page (i.e. the ‘About this Portfolio’ page)

YOUR ePORTFOLIO

Your portfolio is your unique representation of your professionalism. We are therefore not prescribing exactly what pages you should add to those already there. Furthermore, professional portfolios can seem dull and unoriginal if they are constructed in exactly the same way, so we encourage you to be professional and thoughtful in how you present your front cover and the structure of your portfolio.

1. Creating your Portfolio and Front page

First, decide what information you want to present on your Home Page. Then to set up and start developing your portfolio, you can refer to the IML eLearning Tipsheets at

. Attach a current CV/Resume to the homepage. If you have not already prepared a CV/resume or wish to improve your CV the career service at UTS is a good place to start and this link will be helpful

2. Structuring the Pages for your Portfolio

Design the structure for your portfolio (best to prepare on paper first). Using the ‘add page’ feature, add the pages and headings you think are most appropriate for your portfolio (like a content list). Note well: For assessment 1 you need only to create your added pages and give them a title
. You
do not
need to add material to the pages you have listed in the structure. You will do this for Assessment 2. We advise you spend your time for assignment 1 thinking about a professional and distinctive front page and structure that will serve you well for your beginning career. You will defend the choice of structure and appearance by writing a good rationale.

3. Portfolio Rationale

On the ‘About this Portfolio’ page you are to write (not attach) a rationale explaining what your portfolio is about to your prospective audience and why you have designed and structured it in the way you have. The structure of your portfolio is to be supported by a rationale that includes:

1. A review of recent literature on the use and structure of professional portfolios

2. A critique of example e-portfolios

3. An overview of position requirements and developmental needs of beginning and experienced registered nurses

4. An understanding of the NMBA Continuing Professional Development Registration Standard

Students are NOT required to use references outside subject readings for this assessment.

Marking Criteria: Assessment 1

This assessment will be graded according to the following five criteria.

Each criterion is equally weighted:

1. The homepage reflects your professional stage of development, and it illustrates the development of ideas expressed in the rationale. It strives to be creative as well as professional in appearance;

2. A brief CV is linked to the homepage (no more than 2 pages) which is relevant to beginning nursing practice and professionally presented, in terms of format, level of writing, editing and proofreading;

3. The rationale for your ePortfolio structure and design refers to a variety of information sources relevant to the development of a professional portfolio and supports appropriate career aspirations and goals;

4. The rationale demonstrates an ability to: evaluate information, compare and contrast ideas and draw conclusions; and to reflect on your own unique experiences throughout your degree and life;

5. The portfolio rationale is well structured, presents ideas clearly and reflects a professional level of writing, referencing, editing and proofreading (spelling and grammar; UTS Harvard requirements).
