Preparation: Research, class discussions, first hand arts experiences
Purpose: To demonstrate your overall synthesis of analysis of course themes.
Task: Your Final Paper will be an in-depth analytic essay. You will analyze one of the following 7 humanities themes through the arts:
Religion
Morality
Happiness
Love
Life-Affirmation
Freedom
Nature
You will support your analysis with two artworks of your choice from two disciplines that you have not studied in the previous two Arts Papers. For example, if you have studied Literature and The Musical Stage, you should not use artworks from these two disciplines in this Final Paper. Reminder: Before beginning the Final Paper, submit the Outline and Annotated Bibliography for Final Paper in Week 10.
Notes:
A substantial portion of the paper should reflect your own responses, interpretation and evaluation of the artwork.
To study the theme, you may begin with close reading of the chapter of the same theme from your textbook, The Art of Being Human. However, you should find additional reading to learn more about particular thoughts/concepts/philosophy. It would also be important to find additional resources to help you understand the meaning, significance, context and history of the artworks.
Include at least two additional references to help you understand the discipline, genre and significance and background of the artwork. These resources must come from reliable academic sources such as journal, book, and special publication for the exhibition. If you choose to study contemporary artwork, you may find art critic papers very helpful, which can also be found online. MLA style is preferred in the field of humanities and thus in this course.
Make sure to give a title to your essay.

When evaluating your paper, I will pay attention to the work that you choose to study. The work should have significant artistic, social, historical or cultural values. It should come from first hand experience. While you may use internet resources to gain some initial ideas for your study, except online professional journals, many internet resources are NOT academically sound (e.g. Wikipedia). So please avoid citing/using non-academic internet resources.

As an analytic essay, I’d expect to see your ability to formulate a clear thesis, to support this thesis, to generate original analysis, and to synthesize and apply the appropriate language of art to describe and analyze two artworks. In analyzing the theme, I’d expect you to discuss a few of the important thoughts/concepts/philosophy associated with the theme, compare and contrast the different thoughts/concepts/philosophy, and provide original analysis to show how such theme contributes to something significant about your lives, the humanities, the Western traditions, or contemporary society. Carefully choose two artworks that significantly deal with the theme of your choosing. Describe/review/summarize the artworks and provide essential information about the artworks. Compare and/or contrast how well two artworks deal with the theme.
