    STEMM AUDIT

The purpose of this assignment is to give students an opportunity for real-world feedback and engagement with an analytical non-believer. This is a multi-stepped assignment.

    STEP #1: Set Up

Near the beginning of the course, students should set up a time to interview an analytical, intellectual and/or STEMM-oriented person. Your interview candidate should fit the following criteria:Someone who identifies as a non-Christian (a former believer who no longer professes Christ is fine, a member of another religion, or wasn’t raised in the church) or is a Christian who is struggling with their faith and,Someone who has a scientific, medical, mathematics, engineering or some other technical background. In other words, someone who is more of an intellectual or analytical orientation.

  • If the person lives far away, consider setting up a phone or video (Skype or Zoom) call. If you have difficulty finding a qualified candidate, you may find it helpful to crowd source for recommendations via social media. You may need to assure the person that this is strictly an information-gathering interview, and not a covert evangelism project.
  • STEP #2: Interview

  • take notes to record/interview/conversation of what the person states. This conversation should primarily be about discovering the other person (not on telling your story or defending the faith) and his or her questions about/obstacles to believing in Jesus as Creator and Savior. Also, be prepared to listen to the ways religious people may have hurt them.
  • Here are some questions to get the conversation started and keep it going.Explore the person’s spiritual history: May I ask you about your religious background/church experience? What were the religious beliefs of your parents? Can you tell me about your religious beliefs now? Do you believe in a Creator or higher power?Do you think that God has revealed Himself through any kind of holy book? What do you think of Jesus? Who was He?How would you define Christianity? What do you think of Christians? What prevents you from being a Christian/being involved in a local church? What are your major struggles with faith? What drove you into work in a STEMM field? Why did you choose that field of study?Does your work in a STEMM field impact your views on religion?

  • During your conversation, encourage the person to be very honest in their comments and focus on being a good listener. It wouldn’t be unusual if the situations that led to this person’s unbelief were the result of a deeply personal situation.
  • STEP #3: Conversation Summary and Analysis:

Write a 3-page reflection essay about the interview, summarizing his or her perspective. The debrief should consist of two parts:summary of the conversation and its key topics and themes (2/3 of the paper), andan analysis of what you personally learned from this engagement (1/3 of the paper). The summary section should include some of the following:Discuss any of the obstacles to faith discussed in the class lectures that came up in these conversations. What were the big questions that this person has about faith that hinder him/her from considering the claims of Christ?Summarize any feedback you received about how Christians have actually been a stumbling block to faith for this person. The analysis section (what you learned as a result of this conversation) should include the following:Discuss any new insights you had into the culture of scientists and thinkers. What feelings/thoughts did you have during the conversation about the other person? What did you notice about yourself (positively and negatively)? What are some areas that you see you need to work on in order to engage “thinkers” better?
