Course at a Glance
Course Description
This course is designed to aid students in understanding the dynamics of interpersonal relationships. Verbal and nonverbal
communication patterns between people in personal, social, academic, and professional settings will be examined, and the
nature of those interactions will be evaluated using contemporary communication theory. The course will enable students
to identify their interpersonal communication behaviors and to more critically evaluate their own oral communication and
that of others. A primary goal of the course is to improve the quality of students’ communication in their personal and
professional relationships.
Course Design
Many students consider interpersonal communication to be nothing more than common sense. If so, it is common sense
that is often not well practiced. This course design has been developed to help students communicate more effectively in
their interpersonal relationships through course readings, journal and magazine articles, quizzes, a media assignment, and
written assignments.
Each assignment in this course has been specifically created and evaluated to coincide with the learning outcomes of
COM 200. Not only do the elements of this course seek to fulfill the learning outcomes of COM 200 but they also attempt
to engage students and increase their overall interest in the field of interpersonal communication. This course has been
designed to provide students with the tools necessary to apply current and relevant research and skills into their
professional, academic, and personal lives.
Effective and constructive interpersonal communication is the building block of all other areas of communication. This
course should lead to a broad understanding of interpersonal communication and the elements within. COM 200 focuses
on dyadic relationships and the communication process that drives relational development, maintenance, and
disengagement. Students will have the opportunity to test their own assumptions in light of current research and in the
discussion interaction atmosphere of an online classroom setting.

Components of Course Evaluation
Multiple measures of evaluation are used in the course, allowing students opportunities to demonstrate their learning in
more than one way, and giving consideration to individual learning styles. Course components that will be evaluated
include:
Discussions
Each week students will participate in online discussions with classmates, which are related to the week’s readings. These
discussions replace the interactive dialogue that occurs in the traditional classroom setting. Each week, students’ initial
discussion posts are due by 11:59 p.m. (of the time zone in which each student resides) on Day 3 (Thursday). Students
will have until 11:59 p.m. on Day 7 (the following Monday) to make the required minimum number of response posts to
classmates. Discussions represent 35% of the overall course grade.
Quizzes
In Weeks One and Two, students will demonstrate and reinforce their understanding of the week’s content by taking
open-book quizzes. Students have up to 12 hours to complete a quiz once they begin. The quiz must be completed in one
sitting, by Day 6 of the week in which it is due. The questions are multiple choice and true/false. Each quiz is worth five
(5) percent. Quizzes represent 15% of the overall course grade.
Assignments
There is a written assignment due in Weeks One through Four of this course. These assignments must reflect college-level
writing and critical thinking. Assignments represent 25% of the overall course grade.

Posting Due by Day 3. Everyone Has a Culture. Some students think that they do not have much of a
cultural background because they were not born outside of the United States or because they do not speak another
language. The truth is that everyone has a culture! Your culture can be related to your race, ethnicity, gender, age,
nationality, religion, sexual orientation, ability, etc. Take some time to write about your own culture and share
with us what makes you who you are. Try to not focus on just one aspect of yourself, but try to utilize as many
cultural elements as possible. Also, address why culture is important in communication. How does your culture
affect your communication with others?

Posting Due by Day 3. Willingness to Listen. Research from communication expert, James McCroskey, has
been influential within the interpersonal communication field. He is especially well-known for his communication
research scales. Go to the Willingness to Listen website and complete the “Willingness to Listen Measure.”
Follow the directions on the website to score your results. Based on your results, do you have a high, moderate, or
low willingness to listen to others? How do you think your willingness to listen score could impact your
interpersonal relationships? Do you think that this measure was accurate for you? What about the measure do you
think was or was not accurate?
Your initial response should be 150-200 words in length and is due by Thursday, Day 3. Respond to at least two
of your classmates’ posts by Monday, Day 7. (You must create one initial post and at least two responses, for a
minimum of three posts for this discussion.)

“Can We Talk? Researcher Talks about the Role of Communication in Happy Marriages,” from the ProQuest
database found in the Ashford Online Library. Write a one-page paper (excluding title and reference pages) about
your thoughts on this article. In your paper, be sure to address the following:

relate to and provide examples of your own experiences. If not, what has your experience been regarding
self-disclosure in your intimate relationships?
b. Do you agree that self-disclosure is important and directly related to satisfaction in relationships? Why or
why not?
c. What about gender differences? Remember, although research has found differences in gender

Posting Due by Day 3. Empathy. In this week’s readings the author discusses emotional intelligence, a
concept which measures people’s ability to understand emotions and express them appropriately. As you have
learned, this ability is crucial to communicating effectively in interpersonal relationships. One of the major
components of emotional intelligence is the ability to empathize with others. First, describe in your own words
what it means to have empathy. Second, share an example of a time when you found it difficult to empathize with
someone. How did you handle the situation? What could you have done differently to empathize with them?
Your initial response should be 150-200 words in length and is due by Thursday, Day 3. Respond to at least two
of your classmates’ posts by Monday, Day 7. (You must create one initial post and at least two responses, for a
minimum of three posts for this discussion.)

Posting Due by Day 3. Attraction in Interpersonal Relationships. Chapter Eight of Making Connections:
Understanding Interpersonal Communication addresses the various elements that attract us to other people when
we first enter a relationship. It might be just one thing that we like about another person or it could be several
things. What do you look for in other people when you first meet them? This could be a potential romantic partner
or even a platonic friend. Either way, we each look for or are attracted to certain things when we meet people.
Share an example of a time when you developed a friendship/relationship with someone whom you did not get
along with at first. What changed for you?
Your initial response should be 150-200 words in length and is due by Thursday, Day 3. Respond to at least two

Posting Due by Day 3. Unprofessional Work Environments. One of the most frustrating situations in the
professional world is to work with someone who is not professional. This often makes the work environment a
disheartening one. Have you ever found yourself in a situation where the work environment was unprofessional?
How did you handle the situation? Share an example. If your work experience is limited, consider a time when
you were working with others in a different context, such as school or a club. Also, address how you can combat
this in the future with effective communication skills.
Your initial response should be 150-200 words in length and is due by Thursday, Day 3. Respond to at least two

Posting Due by Day 3. The Influence of Mediated Communication. Social media (e.g., email, blogs,
Facebook, Skype, Twitter) has played a major role in changing the way that we engage in interpersonal
communication. As we have learned this week, communicating through electronic media is referred to as
mediated communication. There are pros and cons to using mediated communication in our interpersonal
relationships. How has mediated communication improved your interpersonal relationships? How has it hurt
them? Provide examples to illustrate your point.
Your initial response should be 150-200 words in length and is due by Thursday, Day 3. Respond to at least two
of your classmates’ posts by Monday, Day 7. (You must create one initial post and at least two responses, for a
