Cold War Research
Even while Allies during WWII, the Soviet Union and the United States had raised tensions with each other. With the fall of Germany the Cold War began. For this project you need to choose one event/situation of the Cold War that you feel was the most critical to the world. The outcome of the event/situation that you choose could have had a positive or negative effect on the world. Your job is to prove why it is the most important.
Possible Topics (if you’re choosing from this list, remember, you can choose only one):

Rise of Communism in China
Rise of Communism in Cuba
Vietnam War
Cuban Missile Crisis
Nixon/ China
Afghanistan
The Arms Race
Publisher: You are a journalist living during the 2nd half of the 20th century. You are to create a magazine special issue on your chosen event and its ramification worldwide. You must have 5-6 articles in your magazine and it should also include pictures. Your articles should be as follows:
a. At least one research article where you chronicle the timeline of your chosen event
b. At least one article where you argue the importance of the event
c. At least one editorial piece where you argue either for or against a major, controversial decision made during the event
d. Your other 2-3 articles can take any format, but must be about your event in some way. You can expand on one of the first three topics (for example, two editorial pieces, one pro, one con) or you can try something different. Examples could include but are not limited to: creative piece (story, poem, interview of someone involved in the event, or someone left out); article about someone directly affected by the event; bio piece on someone involved in the event, etc…
e. You must include a Works Cited. You can include it as part of your magazine or you can submit a separate Word document
Rubric:
Each article you write will be weighted the same and will be based on the following criteria:
1. If you write 5 articles
a. Each is worth 17 pts.
i. Factually correct relation of events – 5
ii. Clear evaluation of significance of events – 6
iii. Use of specific details to develop article – 6
b. Style, mechanics, pictures, works cited – 15
2. If you write 6 articles
a. Each is worth 15 pts
i. Factually correct relation of events – 5
ii. Clear evaluation of significance of events – 5
iii. Use of specific details to develop article – 5
b. Style, mechanics, pictures, works cited – 10
