Harvard Referencing – a short guide
It is important to reference your work and cite the sources you’ve used clearly
and correctly. This is especially important at Advanced Level 7. This may take
a bit of practice, as it is not be the easiest skill to get right initially. Remember,
you should always try to find the original source instead of using Avado
learning material.
We have put together this short guide to give you extra information on how
to reference. We hope that this helps. If you have any other questions, please
reach out to the CIPD tutors, as they will gladly help you.
There are two options for in-text referencing:
o
o
Direct quotations
Paraphrasing an idea
Direct quotes
Direct quotes should be used sparingly and support your arguments. Ideally,
they should be avoided – used on their own, they do not count towards your
answer, as they are not your own words.
Here is an example of how to reference a direct in-text quotation:
Marchington and Kynighou (2012, p. 3336) stated: “Given that the global
financial crisis (GFC) has impacted on patterns of human resource
management, it is likely that this has also shaped employee involvement and
participation (EIP).”
Here is an example of how to paraphrase referenced text into your own
words:
Paraphrasing
Marchington and Kynighou (2012) suggest that the global financial crisis has
had a significant impact on employee participation and involvement.
However, in contrast, Taylor and Woodhams (2012) stated that it was more to
do with UK bank infrastructure than the global financial crisis.
Paraphrase means you are essentially writing the original author’s words in
your own words. However, it still must be accurately referenced.
Referencing in-text websites
As for websites, please do not do this!
As suggested by the BBC (2105) https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business34324772, VW has been accused of modifying some of the software in their
diesel engines to avoid detection during testing.
Instead, do this!
According to Hotten (2015), VW has been accused of modifying some of the
software in their diesel engines to avoid detection during testing.
You need to find the author of the BBC source and reference them, not the
BBC.
Same source and year
Sometimes you might want to use different CIPD articles that have been
published in the same year but don’t mention an author. For example:
CIPD (2021a) ‘Health and Wellbeing at Work Report’ suggested that Covid-19
will not disappear. Organisations have put policies and procedures in place
to deal with Covid, such as ensuring that workers in critical services are fully
vaccinated (CIPD, 2021b).
Note the use of a and b. If you have more than one website of the same year
from the same source, use letters after the year.
At the end of the report, you need to produce a reference list. This references
the sources you have cited in the text. You can also produce a bibliography
showing what you have read but not cited.
An example of a reference list
The references should be in A-Z order of the first letter of the source.
Example CIPD website:
CIPD. (2021a.) Health and Wellbeing at Work 2021. Available at:
https.cipd.co.uk/Images/health-wellbeing-work-report-2021_tcm1893541.pdf [Accessed 02/09/2021].
CIPD (2021b). Responding to the coronavirus. Available at:
https://www.cipd.co.uk/knowledge/coronavirus#gref> [Accessed
02/09/2021].
Example of referencing a BBC website, using author
Hotten, R. (2015). Volkswagen: The scandal explained. BBC. Available at:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-34324772 [Accessed 02/09/2021].
Example of referencing an academic journal
Marchington, M. and Kynighou, A. (2007). The dynamics of employee involvement and
participation during turbulent times. International Journal of Human Resource
Management. Vol. 23, No. 16. Pp. 3336 –3354.
Example of referencing a textbook
Taylor, S. and Woodhams, C. (2016). Managing People and Organisations. 1st
ed. McGraw-Hill Education Europe, Middle East and Africa.

CIPD Word Count Policy – October 2022
CIPD provides a word count for each core and pathway assessment. This word count is
relative to the credit value of the unit and learners are required to stay within this -/+ 10% and
declare their word count on submission of each assessment.
Where the learner exceeds the word count beyond the +10%, the assessment should be
rejected for marking, returned to the learner and counted as a refer. Learners will then be
allowed to resubmit their assessment in line with the CIPD referral policy.
Included within the word count should be any text that is central to a learner’s answer, and
which responds to and addresses the questions/tasks, excluding data presented in tables and
diagrams. Where a learner wishes to present information that is not central to their response,
but which underpins and is relevant to it, linked appendices may be provided and will not be
counted within the word count. When assessing learner work, the appendices should not be
marked but considered as information that supports the learner’s submission.
Further information about what is included in, and excluded from, the word count is set out
below – the components will vary according to the level of qualification being studied:

Where learners resubmit work after a referral, they are still required to adhere to the word
count policy for the assessment. However, only the assessment criteria on which a learner has
been referred should be re-marked.
For centre devised assessments, centres should set a word count limit in line with CIPD’s
approach which is 3900 words for a 6-credit unit at Associate level and 4000 words for a 15
credit unit at Advanced level and follow the same principles as described above.
