Being an Education Administrator of a child care development facility can be very demanding on one’s time and energy. Each person brings their own strengths and weaknesses to the position. Motivations to start a business vary as well. Personal characteristics and certain types of skills are required to run a successful business. It is not uncommon for a director to over commit to responsibilities in an attempt to meet all of the needs involved in the day-to-day operation of a child care program. This can have a tremendous impact on the director’s personal life. It’s good to be able to match your personal style with the right type of center environment, so take your personal reflection and determine a good environment for you.

Keep the survey results in mind as you write your essay that has an introduction, body and conclusion and references. Identify four types of child care centers and describe them. For each type of center consider the following and analyze what type is best for you based on: 1) your own assessment of your motivations to start a business, 2) your personal characteristics in terms of strengths and weaknesses, and 3) your skills.

Analyze your strengths and weakness, how you can build on strengths, and how you can overcome or compensate for weaknesses. Include the completed survey in addition to the essay.

Skills – Short answer questions

Do you know what basic skills you’ll need to operate a successful family daycare home?

Do you possess these skills?

Do you have any business experience?

Have you ever worked as a director or manager?

Have you reared children of your own?

Do you have any child care experience?

Is responsibility new to you?

Are you willing to work long hours if necessary?

Are immediate profits or covering costs important to you?

When hiring personnel, will you be able to determine if the applicant’s skills meet the requirements for the position you are filling?

If you are in excellent physical health, a good problem solver, usually take the initiative, a risk taker and feel comfortable making decisions, then you probably will be comfortable managing a business. If you think you can succeed because 1) you have sufficient cash to operate through the critical first year (or feel confident you can raise the money) 2) you are willing to work long hours at relatively low pay and 3) you believe you possess the necessary skills-you have a chance to succeed.
