electrophoresis in the field of biology, chemistry
and physics
Objectives:
✔ Learners should be able to indicate the correlation between the molecular weight of samples and their
movement through a matrix (Link to chemistry).
✔ Learners should be able to identify a DNA sample using gel electrophoresis (Link to biology).
✔ Learners should be able to identify the correlation between the electrical charge of a molecule and it’s speed of
movement up the matrix. (Link to physics)

Introduction
Electrophoresis is a general term that describes the migration and separation of charged particles (ions) under
the influence of an electric field. An electrophoretic system consists of two electrodes of opposite charge
(anode, cathode), connected by a conducting medium called an electrolyte. The electrokinetic phenomenon of
electrophoresis was observed for the first time in 1807 by Russian professors Peter Ivanovich Strakhov and
Ferdinand Frederic Reuss at Moscow University, who noticed that the application of a constant electric field
caused clay particles dispersed in water to migrate. It is ultimately caused by the presence of a charged
interface between the particle surface and the surrounding fluid. It is the basis for analytical techniques used in
chemistry for separating molecules by size, charge, or binding affinity.
Description
You have to make a PowerPoint presentation that highlights the properties of matter in sports or construction.
Please follow the guidelines how to prepare your presentation.
Guidelines
Your PowerPoint slides should contain the following information:
1. The cover page, which should contain the class, topic and names of the students that were involved in
the project.
2. You should include a general introduction of Gel electrophoresis, how it is carried out, types of samples
that can be analyzed by this technique, sample preparation, separation of fragments and analyzing
results.

3. In your link to physics, you need to how the electric field affects the movement of the charge up the
matrix.
4. In your link to biology, you need to describe how gel electrophoresis is used to separate DNA
fragments.
5. In your link to chemistry, you should describe how samples are separated based on their molecular
weight and ionic charge.
6. Please include images and diagrams in your presentation and any appropriate visual description to
improve your presentation
7. In one slide write your references.
You should have at least 10 slides. Your report should between 2 to 4 STUDENTS. IT MUST BE DONE
IN GROUPS, NOT INDIVIDUALLY.
