This assignment is aimed at giving students practice in being informed consumers of
scientific news. It involves reading a science news article and then performing a
literature search for a related peer-reviewed journal article.
1. The News/Magazine Article.
Find a news article about a scientific topic that interests you. This news article
should be recent (from the last ten years). It must be from an actual news source
(CNN, BBC, etc.) or a magazine (National Geographic, the Atlantic, etc.). Do
NOT use Wikipedia or someone’s personal blog or website.
Give the complete citation for the article according to ACS format:
Summarize the article in 2-3 sentences.

2. The Journal Article.
Locate a scientific peer-reviewed journal article that is related to the topic
discussed in the news/magazine article. This journal article may detail a study
directly referenced in the news article, but it does not have to be.
For help in searching for a relevant article, read Section 2 in the provided
Handouts. Make sure you can access a full-text version of the article. Full-text
versions of various journals can be found by searching for eJournals on the
Suffolk University library webpage (https://www.suffolk.edu/sawlib/). Please note
that you will have to sign in to gain access to the eJournals if you are off-campus.
Give the complete citation for the article according to ACS format:
Explain how you found the article. Be specific about the search engine and
how you accessed the full text.
Is the article primary or secondary literature? How do you know?
Read the article. Summarize the article in 2-3 sentences.
3. Briefly explain how your two articles are related.
