Network design refers to the process via which computer networks are planned, as well as, designed. Network design is considered a vital decision not only business wise but also technological wise. Network design is basically a principal business decision due to the fact that it supports critical business lines which could be impacted negatively in the event that there is a poor network design. As at present, network design has turned out as the backbone of every business enterprise. This is because it is relatively the most dependable and efficient procedure of phone communications along with computer infrastructure operations. The level at which internal along with external communication can be carried out within a business enterprise is a determinant factor of its success hence the need of a good network design. It is through adequate networked services that the businesses’ current customers are served appropriately while new potential customers can be developed (Donahue, 2007). Moreover, network designs enable business to communicate from any place within any time. An effective communication network offers a working environment which is more productive for both the employees along with the management personnel. Therefore, it s evident that network downtime can lead to loss in revenue due to poor customer service in addition to decreased employee productivity.

In regard to technology, a good network design is considered as a technological decision due to various reasons. First, it is through the network design that managers are able to not only link but also coordinate individuals from many organizations to undertake diverse duties from different locations. Electronic means are currently being utilized in facilitating contacts along with professional relations within the network (Rybaczyk, 2004). In addition, the network design makes use of computerized technologies through which managers get in the position of coordinating distributors, manufacturers, suppliers, as well as, designers in a considerably prompt and timely manner. Therefore, through the network design, it has been established that managers will operate with their suppliers along with customers at a close proximity, just as they operate with their staff.

Additionally, through the design the company is able to lower server costs, SAN costs, as well as, lowering cooling costs (Oppenheimer, 2005).

The aforementioned plans bring about simple, cost effective, as well as, reliable disaster recovery solutions. In addition, it allows the development of virtual desktop environments which utilize centralized servers along with thin clients supporting numerous users while maintaining standard personal computer configurations which assist in lowering both capital, as well as, operating costs (Rybaczyk, 2004). Moreover, virtualization enables development, test along with production environments to exist amicably within the same servers. It also assists to make the server purchasing decisions to be decoupled from application deployment. The company also takes advantage of the effective network design to deploy new applications in virtual environments and scale them on demand so as to accommodate the changing business needs.
