NOTE: You must complete ALL elements of the Assessment Task as described to PASS this unit.
Purpose
This task enhances your self-awareness of personal strengths and values relating to work and
develops your personal and career goals.
Task description
During the first three weeks of the course, the weekly content will incorporate a range of activities to
assist you with thinking about and planning your future career. These activities will be used to then
prepare a portfolio of items that together will form a career action plan.
(In this case, I want to become a accounting consultant, and I am studying
Bachelor of Professional Accounting in university my last year.
I don’t have any experience related to accounting at the moment, but I might
gain some in the future.
– Please scroll below for the personal VIA result)
The career action plan will incorporate the following elements:
1. A career action plan (400 words)
2. A career story (300 words)
3. A personal assessment: choose either strengths, preferences or vision (300 words)
4. A personal VIA Strengths Assessment and an Employability Profile plus a response (50-70 words)

prepared using a template from Microsoft Word*) and cover letter
Resources for completing each assessment are included in the weekly content as part of class

Below are some questions and answers that may help you clarify what is required in
Assessment Task 1
Secondly, here are some questions and answers:
Could you please provide some more information about how to complete the ‘A
career story’ activity and ‘the personal assessment’ for Assessment 1. Is it the case
of answering the questions in the articles?
There is some flexibility in how you choose to approach the Career Story and Personal
Assessment components of the task. You are welcome to list each of the questions in the
linked article and then write your response below (like a Q&A), or you can use your
answers to the questions to create one short, cohesive piece of writing for each
component. You can think of the task as a contected portfolio of pieces that, when
combined together, reflect your identity and career plan. Whichever approach you
choose, please make sure you keep the criteria and marking guide in mind (connections
between and integration of ideas is part of the criteria).
I have completed the exercise regarding the career action plan and for our
assignment we have to write 400 words, so is it like a summary of what I did in that
pdf?
This would be a good way to approach the career action plan. Given that this is the
longest individual component of the assignment, you can use the plan as an opportunity
to create strong connections between the ideas included in the other parts of the task
(such as the survey results, the personal assessment and your career story). As
mentioned above, it may be helpful to think of the assignment as a whole as a portfolio
of connected pieces. Also, we will talk about the action plan in a little more detail in
Week 3 classes, so you can wait until then to finalise that part of the task.
Some people have asked for prompts to help with working on their career story. In
addition to using the examples of career stories you can find on the Developing
Employability website as models, here are some prompts to may help you get
started:

Your beginnings. What sparked or led to your current career interest? This could
include formative people, experiences, learning, books/films/media, competitions,
sports, holidays — anything the helped set you on the journey you are on now.
A first success. What made this experience a success? What did you learn from
it?
Growth or a big transition. Have you had an ‘aha’ moment where you realised
what you wanted to do for a career? A situation that allowed you to grow or
change for the better? A realisation that something was NOT working for you?
A challenge you have overcome. Challenges and obstacles can be as important
as successes to our growth (and are also a common question in interviews). What

difficulties , or even failures, have you faced and how have you learned and grown
from the experience(s)? This could include mistakes you have made, rejections
you’ve experienced or jobs you’ve hated that have spurred you to find something
better.
A notable menor or influence. We all have people who have shaped our sense
of identity and our goals in a range of ways (both positive and negative), from a
favourite teacher to an encouraging family member to a first boss. Who has
influenced your journey so far?
A driving future goal. This could be based on a combination of elements from
any of the above prompts. If there is a clear goal that you are focused on that has
influenced both your past decisions and your destination, this is part of your
story.
NOTE: You do not need to write about ALL of these prompts — choose the ones most
relevant that will allow you to write 300 words.
As with each of the written components, you can choose whether to write the career
story as one piece or as a response to prompts/questions. Just make sure you keep in
mind the need for connection between and integration of ideas.
