Part 2: The central nervous system is remarkably resistant to infection, largely because of a barrier between the blood circulation and the nervous tissue, referred to as the blood-brain barrier. Although not common, there are cases where a pathogen invades the nervous system and causes disease. These infections can be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoans, or prion-associated.
