Blog Project—AdaptationFor your blog project, you will write about adaptation.
To “adapt” a myth or fairy tale from one source to another requires several choices. For example,
if we decided to make a film about Hercules, we must decide which parts of the story we will
keep, and which we will leave out. Since film is a visual medium, we are more likely to spend
less time describing and more time showing events. A written version of the Hercules story can
include many themes and there is little restriction on length. Meanwhile, a film version needs to
be more focussed and typically has one major theme, with smaller themes and subplots. Finally,
the choices we make are also largely dependent on the social, political, and historical context of
the time. For example, we may ask ourselves why now? Why are we making a film about
Hercules? What are we trying to say about contemporary society by making a film about a
historical, mythological figure from another society? These are the questions directors,
producers, and screenwriters ask themselves as they begin their projects.
For your assignment, I would like you to choose one mythological character from our course and
analyze a contemporary adaptation of their story. The adaptation can take any form, such as:
film, graphic novel, anime, comic book, video game, etc. Within the body of the blog, you
should answer the following questions:
1. In your opinion, is the adaptation successful? Is the character recognizable, or is there a
radical change? If there is a radical change, why was the change made? Always provide
support for your response. Explain the context surrounding the character and their story.
2. When was the adaptation made? What does this tell us about the motivations behind the
adaptation? Is there a political bias? Is there a message about social justice?
3. Does the adaption follow the hero’s journey? Here you can discuss psychological
motivations within the adaptation. I encourage you to identify at least one of Jung’s
archetypes in your analysis.
Since this is a blog, you may make it personal and use “I” pronouns. And you are welcome to
write enthusiastically about your topic. Be passionate but professional. Make points backed up
by research (please DO NOT cite any sources outside the textbook and the images you find to
support your argument).
IMPORTANT: This assignment will pass through Safe Assign, which alerts me to plagiarized
papers. DO NOT use any AI generators in your response. This will result in an automatic zero.
Review the Blog Rubric.
You do not need to post your blog to an online site. Upload a PDF or WORD
The assignment must be a minimum of 700 words: pages double spaced, APA format.
Finally, do not forget to add images in support of your argument.
