2.4 Application Assignment: Managing Data in a Database

Databases manage data and help business leaders to review data to answer business-related questions. Database systems are very important to businesses because databases communicate information related to the business’s activities while providing an opportunity for analysis.

Let’s take a look at a specific example of a small business using a database. Watch the following video about a fictitious bakery called Songbird Bakery.

In the video, you were shown the database that Songbird Bakery employees use every day to manage its menu, a list of customers, and track orders. This business did not always operate with a database. When they were first starting out, the business used a ledger and wrote out orders by hand, then moved to a spreadsheet on the computer so they could keep records more efficiently.

Very quickly, the business moved to a database so that could do so much more.

But how did they get from a spreadsheet to a database?
