Importance of Collaboration and Teamwork
The ability to collaborate with a diverse group of people is necessary in virtually every
profession. As such, it is one of the learning outcomes expected of every graduate of the
College of Professional and Liberal Studies. Your mastery of this goal will allow you to lead and
participate in groups with people whose backgrounds may be different from yours while working
to solve a common problem or work toward a common goal.
The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) has identified collaborating and
working on a team as a core competency necessary for career readiness in the 21st century.
According to NACE, professionals should be able to “build and maintain collaborative
relationships to work effectively toward common goals while appreciating diverse viewpoints
and shared responsibilities.” Some sample behaviors that denote collaboration are:
Listen carefully to others, taking time to understand and ask appropriate questions
without interrupting.
Effectively manage conflict, interact with and respect diverse personalities, and meet
ambiguity with resilience.
Be accountable for individual and team responsibilities and deliverables.
Employ personal strengths, knowledge, and talents to complement those of others.
Exercise the ability to compromise and be agile.
Collaborate with others to achieve common goals.
Build strong, positive working relationships with supervisors, team members/coworkers.
(NACE, 2020)
Many times, we are asked about our ability to collaborate in job interviews and on applications.
Documenting the knowledge and skills associated with this learning outcome in your portfolio
will give you an advantage as you prepare your resume, interview for jobs, or apply for graduate
school. Having this information ready and fresh in your mind will help you prepare for your life
after graduation.
