In relation to the disastrous groupthink prior to the launch of the Challanger space shuttle, this mentality led to the series of decisions that lead to devastation, destruction, and preventable death. Had the team incorporated the IDEA model or a similar method of discussing, understanding, and mitigating risk in a manner where the team expresses valid concerns, asks questions, and reassesses the risk after implementing strategies to mitigate the risks, rather than relying on untested expert opinions, much of the heartache and loss could have been avoided. Ideally, organizations and groups should not accept unnecessary risk, especially in high-risk situations as mentioned in the video regarding the Challanger launch. The IDEA method would have provided a deliberates decision making rubric while avoiding groupthink which negatively impacted this situation.
