In this video ” This is your brain on sugar” by Amy.  Amy is a neuroscientist who is fascinated by how our brains regulate our behavior in our dynamic and evolving environment. Foods we eat, such as junk food have an impact on our brains. When we eat junk food, dopamine is released. Making us feel good and making us want more. But we also run the risk of getting dependent on sugar. Her studies aim to understand the mechanisms through which our experiences in the environment might influence how we react to situations and how the brain regulates our behavior. Her research places a lot of emphasis on how, in addition to making us fatter. The modern diet of soft drinks and junk food might alter our brains. These foods damage brain regions important for memory formation and behavioral control. Which makes us desire to eat more of them.

Research by Amy Reichelt on the results to our brain after the consumption of so much junk food is a reminder on how important our diet really is. Our diet is such an important factor we should take into consideration and be mindful of what we consume. Many of us may think because we are not overweight, we don’t have to have a healthy diet and we can consume plenty of junk food but in reality, most of the damage is being done inside of our bodies and most importantly our brain. Learning that our prefrontal cortex does not fully mature until we are in our 20s it is critical to start incorporating healthy diets at an early age. I found it interesting to learn how an unhealthy diet affects our hippocampus and eating junk food consistently cause inflammation in the memory center of our brain. Knowing how this impairs the ability to learn and remember facts it is important to take care of our health and stay away from so much junk food. After watching this video and how Reichelt explained our brains cells and neurons malfunction with the consistent consumption of an unhealthy diet has been an eye opener and realize the importance of a healthy diet. With all the knowledge from this video I am going to make sure to treat junk food as a reward and to keep staying away. I will be more mindful of what I am consuming and incorporate more foods with omega 3 for the boost in neurogenesis. The next time I do not want to push myself to the gym I will remember all the information given regarding how being active boosts neuroplasticity mechanisms in the brain.
