To complete the following questions you should refer to and download blank copies ‘The Explore Asia’ maps in the online learning resource for ‘Tourism destinations’. However, some have been provided within the assignment for you. You should make several copies of maps for practicing plotting destinations, gateways, main transport routes, physical features and adding your notes.

You will need to refer to additional resources to the online learning materials. These should include reliable internet websites, travel tour brochures for travel in Asia as many of these contain excellent detailed maps, government tourism authorities and associated travel associations for current information.

Following are some suggestions:

Refer to an accurate and reliable world atlas such as those published by Longman

Encyclopaedias and ‘wikipedia’ Internet websites, for example:

Part C: Extended response questions 30 marks

Instructions

1. Write a (one page) letter to a family member or friend explaining all the details of your trip.

Today is 30 May. You are on the last stages of a four week holiday through Asia. So far, you have visited Thailand, Vietnam, China, and now you are visiting Japan.

You should include information such as:

a. Climate—what was the weather like while visiting? When is the best time

to visit this area?

b. Geographical features eg rivers, mountain ranges, beaches etc

c. What is the main international gateway(s) of these countries?

d. State at least four destinations within each of these countries that you have travelled

e. List and describe a tour you participated in at each destination and the sites and attractions that were visited as part of that tour. Are these tours affected greatly by seasonal availability?

f. What did you think about these attractions? Explain what you enjoyed and/or disliked.

g. Transportation: How did you travel between each country? How did you get around whilst visiting your chosen destinations eg boat/ship, train, coach, local bus, local ‘tuk-tuk’, taxi or other hire vehicles with/without driver?

h. Any safety or health issues in the region eg dengue fever, malaria and/or ‘pick-pockets’?

i. Cultural elements including, cultural-mix, predominant religion, traditional and/or local customs

You may find it easier to use the following table headings to first summarise relevant information for each of the countries; plan the content and structure your letter before writing it.

You may like to include colour ‘photographs’ or pictures with your letter (‘flicker.com’ provides ‘copyright-free’ photographs/illustrations).

Remember: to correctly reference all resources including publications and specific internet website URLs in your bibliography.
