The styles around us: Architecture
This week we will be discussing architecture and our sense of house and home. It will be fun if you have a digital camera, but if you don’t I have indicated some links below that you could use to try to find images of the buildings in your area.
Find an image that represents one or two examples of the following buildings in your life. I understand if you might not want to use the exact images of your own space, so try to find an example that looks as close as possible to the request. Include these images on a page or two of your critique:
1. The interior (at least one room) and exterior of the home you live in.
2. One or more homes in your neighborhood.
3. One or more examples of a building you visit regularly: examples would be your place of work, school, church, grocery store, post office, mall?
4. One or more examples of buildings you really like: beautiful, interesting, curious? These can be examples of your dream home, If you have time and energy to, you could look at some famous buildings in Seattle: the new Seattle Public Library, the Experience Music Project (by one of the architects we are looking at in lectures) or the Smith Tower Building (for 20 years the tallest building on the west coast).
In class this week we will do a day that is a review of American vernacular architecture. Make notes that week so you can identify some of the style elements in your buildings. Be aware that contemporary buildings are often a combination of style, rather than a single style. There is also a style guide posted in Angel.
You may use the links below or other resources as additional help to give a style name to each of the buildings you chose above and briefly describe the style: origins, look, major characteristics, and why you like or don’t like this style. Write a brief paragraph for each building (not including images) that describes the style of each building, combination of styles or your best guess.
