Assignment 3 the “AS-IS” and “TO-BE” with a swimlane (Chapter 10)

Overview

In the assignment, you will be documenting the “As is” and the “To be” using the Little Italy Restaurant from Chapter 10. You will also need to create a Swimlane (Cross-functional flowchart) diagram for both processes. For this reason, you have been provided with some resources to help you draw a Swimlane / Cross-functional flowchart. Please follow the instructions listed below.

You MUST complete this model using a Microsoft VISIO diagram embedded inside a WORD document.

Instructions

You already know how to create AS-IS diagrams by the first two assignments and it should be quick for you to create one with Visio shapes “Cross-Functional Flowchart shapes” (a.k.a. Swimlane) and “Basic FlowChart shapes”. I want you to spend more time on “improving the process” by applying techniques of chapter 8 and your own problem-solving skills along while depicting TO-BE. Please review the short LinkedIn Learning section on “Creating a cross-function flow diagram” from this module. As stated previously if you feel unskilled with Microsoft Visio then you should review the LinkedIn Learning program on Visio (listed as an optional resource in the course syllabus).

Please carefully review the case reading from Chapter 10 and the process improvement techniques in chapter 8. Before you start your diagram in Visio, open a WORD document and ensure you have your current state business process analysis documented to help build the AS-IS diagram (feel free to use assignment 2 models described in the webinar – actors, actions, decisions, data, etc. Create AS-IS swimlane – You will now create a swimlane diagram to depict the business process as described in chapter 10 (up to the first paragraph of Page 184). In creating this diagram you should depict the activities and decisions of this process as they are manifest in the existing business process, rather than as you believe they could be improved. Improve current process – The majority of your thinking should be done on analyzing existing processes through the lens of techniques in chapter 8 and your own experiences of problem-solving. Identify those in your current process and how to improve it. Create TO-BE swimlane – Based on your AS-IS diagram and TO-BE opportunities for improvement, create a TO-BE swimlane. Iterate – I am expecting you will do some back-and-forth updating both diagrams based on your TO-BE analysis and trying to clearly visualize the improvements. Please try to keep the diagram on a scale that is not difficult to review for a reader who does own magnifying glass. If you feel you had to make any assumptions about the case narrative when creating your flowchart, please list these in the document after your diagram. It is also likely you may have unanswered questions about parts of the process narrative in the case that you feel are incomplete – please also list any such questions.

BASIC ASSIGNMENT REPORT FORMAT:

  1. Brief Narrative (Describe the basic situation on which you will focus)
  2. Problem Statement (Specify the problem)
  3. Analysis – Includes your current state process analysis and process improvement analysis
