control measures? More of these questions will be answered in my term paper with more
details.

Using PubMed
To Locate Scholarly Journal Articles, Fall 2020
Go to the Advanced Search page of PubMed: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/advanced/
The web page looks like this:
Type a search term that interests you (such as confined space, toxic release, etc.):
Click SHOW INDEX to see index items that begin with the term you entered:
Using PubMed, Fall 2020
Page 1
Scroll through the index list:
Pick an appropriate index term, and click on it:
Using PubMed, Fall 2020
Page 2
Click ADD to move the search term to the query box:
Since the term paper instructions require a minimum of 5 peer-reviewed journal articles, we’ll limit
the search results to journals. Scroll through the box at left and select PUBLICATION TYPE
Type “journal” for Publication type . . . Then click SHOW INDEX
Using PubMed, Fall 2020
Page 3
From the drop-down menu, click “journal article”:
Click AND to enter the publication type in the Query Box:
The term paper instructions indicate Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) is not an acceptable
publication, so we’ll exclude it from the search results. First select JOURNAL from the drop-down
menu at left:
Using PubMed, Fall 2020
Page 4
Next, type “occupational health and safety” in the search box. . . Then click SHOW INDEX
From the drop down menu, click “occupational health and safety waco tex”:
From the drop-down menu on the right, click Add with NOT to exclude results from this journal:
Using PubMed, Fall 2020
Page 5
Now, click SEARCH to see the results:
On this day, our search found 992 journal articles related to the search term.
It will be hard to read through 992 articles, so let’s refine the results by adding a few more search
terms. We can either return to the Advanced Search page, or we can add the new search terms in the
box near the top of the page, as we will do here:
Using PubMed, Fall 2020
Page 6
Move the cursor and click at the end of the last term in the box near the top of the page. Then type in
the additional search terms. To limit our results to workplace safety and health, we’ll type the
following: AND (OCCUPATIONAL OR WORK) AND (INJURY OR DEATH). Then, we’ll click
SEARCH:
The additional search terms brought the results down to 46 journal articles. This is a more
manageable number.
We can scroll through the pages of results and click on the title of an article, if we wish. Let’s click
to see more information about this article:
Using PubMed, Fall 2020
Page 7
After clicking on the article title, we see the abstract, which is an abbreviated summary of the article.
On the right, we may also see a link to a full text version of the entire article. Since this article does
not have a full text link, we may have to order the article from Interlibrary Loan if we wish to read it.
Note the link on the right for SIMILAR ARTICLES. This link will take us to a list of articles on the
same topic.
For now, let’s click the BACK arrow in the upper left to return to the search results:
Using PubMed, Fall 2020
Page 8
Back at the search results, we can narrow our results to free full-text articles by clicking the FREE
FULL TEXT link on the left.
After clicking the FREE FULL TEXT link, we see that within the last 46 articles, there are 3 with
free full-text access within PubMed. To get a larger list of free full-text articles, we might decide to
remove some of our previous search terms. For now, though, let’s just look through these 3 articles:
Using PubMed, Fall 2020
Page 9
Let’s click the title of this article to see more information:
After clicking, we see the abstract. If the abstract sounds interesting, we may wish to read the article
to decide whether it has information we can use in our term paper. When PubMed has a full-text
version of an article, we can click on the full text links to view it:
We can click either of the two links. I’ll click PMC
FREE FULL TEXT. (The next view would be slightly
different if we clicked ELSEVIER OPEN ACCESS.)
Using PubMed, Fall 2020
Page 10
After clicking PMC FREE FULL TEXT , the full text appears at left (only a portion is shown in this
image). We can also select a different viewing format (for instance, we can download the entire
article as a PDF:
After clicking the PDF link, we can read the entire 9-page article in pdf format:
Using PubMed, Fall 2020
Page 11
Back at the search results, we can click CITE to get a citation for the article.
After clicking the CITE link, we see the information needed to cite the article in our reference list:
Using PubMed, Fall 2020
Page 12
We can use the drop-down menu at right to select APA format.
Then we can copy the citation and paste it into the reference list for our term paper:
IMPORTANT: The computer-generated citation may deviate from APA style.
It is your responsibility to check the format after pasting into your term paper to ensure it
complies with the APA style requirements as discussed in the Term Paper Instructions.
For instance, the reference shown above has several elements that must be corrected because
they deviate from APA style. These issues include improper capitalization in the article title and
in the journal title.
