Reasons and Rationalizations

As you continue learning about the pillars of GVV, you have worked hard to understand who you are and what you believe in, what your strengths are, and what factors enable or inhibit us from acting on our values. In this pillar, you learn that you may now take the next step by identifying circumstances that could prevent action. You see many examples of this, including organizational or personal roadblocks. The reasons and rationalization pillar asserts that if you can anticipate the typical reasons & rationalizations given for ethically questionable behavior, you are able to identify and prepare well-reasoned responses.

1. What points from these videos were particularly relevant and interesting to you? Why?
2. The videos talk about two types of rationalizations, Preemptive or Real Time. Thinking back over your past experiences, have any of these rationalizations impacted your decision making? Can you cite an example? How did you feel about this from a values and ethics perspective?
3. In Gentile’s article, Values Driven Leadership (2021) she talks about strategies and tools that leaders can use to reduce the two types of rationalizations that are identified in the videos. To the degree that you feel comfortable analyze your current organization or one that you have worked for in the past andIdentify the types of organizational/cultural factors that would result in the types of rationalizations seen in the videosIdentify the strategies and tools that are suggested in the article that would have remediated the issues to increase your confidence when taking the risk to work with others.
4. As you continue planning for real world application of GVV, this pillar helps you understand what organization roadblocks would prevent you from implementing your plan to act on your values. Using the same situation identified in prior units, describe the factors that would impact your plan implementation Identify any strategies and tools that you can use to help reduce these issues. Also, information on how your purpose statement helped you in creating this plan. Seek feedback from your peers for additional suggestions or options. You may want to save this information using this GVV worksheet as an action plan for implementing the GVV approach in a real world situation.
