Milestone Two
Market Profile: India
Cultural Profile
Cultural differences between India and the US emerged as necessary when assessing
business strategy for the future. Communication in India is primarily face-to-face, indirect, and
contextual, based on hierarchy and body language. In contrast, American communication is most
often more explicit and literal. Cultural factors embracing power distance mean that while the
USA is more egalitarian, India prefers tall structures (Rao & Thombre, 2021). The aspect of
individualism and collectivism defines yet another critical divide. While Americans value
freedom and self-reliance, for the Indians, community compliance and conformity are
paramount.
In comparison to the relatively casual and uninhibited business interactions in the United
States of America, business people in India maintain formal etiquette, such as the use of titles
and respect for hierarchical roles and ages. Some other features of Indians and their culture
include affectivity, high-context communication, relation-oriented culture, respect for traditional
customs and values, and a polychronic view of time. Festivals and social values significantly
influence consumer behavior and should be considered in marketing strategies. Grasping these
cultural subtleties is essential for customizing product features, marketing campaigns, and
business practices to meet local expectations and improve acceptance in the Indian market.
Political and Economic Profile
Unlike the US, India’s political and economic environment has unique opportunities and
challenges. India is a Federal Parliamentary Republic as opposed to the Federal Republic of the
United States. This distinction impacts governance and regulatory frameworks. President
3
Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India heavily emphasize economic
reforms and digital projects. At the same time, US President Joe Biden focuses on infrastructure
and technological innovation. India is classified as a developing country despite having a lower
per capita income because of its tremendous development potential, even if its GDP is $3.417
trillion. The United States is a developed country with a mature market and significant consumer
purchasing power, with a GDP of $27.36 trillion (United States, 2023). The US has more free
trade policies under agreements like USMCA, whereas India imposes different tariffs and trade
restrictions to protect indigenous businesses. These differences in government intervention in
trade are notable. India’s participation in economic blocs such as SAARC and BRICS contrasts
with the US’s involvement in USMCA and WTO, influencing trade dynamics and market access.
Understanding these political and economic differences helps strategize market entry, navigate
regulatory landscapes, and effectively leverage economic opportunities.
Legal and Regulatory Profile
Considering legal and regulatory factors is essential when entering the Indian market. In
contrast to the more liberal trade climate in the United States, trade limitations in India include
export and import levies meant to safeguard domestic businesses. The FDA and other safety
standards bodies set the United States norms. On the other hand, the Bureau of Indian Standards
(BIS) in India regulates products and demands certificates for particular products (Jauhri &
Pathak, 2022). The legal regimes in India are still nascent and more complex than the legal
structures in the US, which already have sound and elaborate laws governing corporate activities.
Foreign enterprises have challenges in India because of restrictions on imports that require
several approvals and the application of complex legal frameworks. Moreover, because of the
Indian legal requirement, one needs to adhere to the local employment laws and several other
4
permits and licenses. Understanding these legal and regulatory requirements helps in completing
the documents needed, ensures compliance, and resolves legal issues. By analyzing and
comparing these variables, businesses can establish effective strategies to minimize risks,
enhance efficiency, and successfully navigate the issues related to entering the Indian market
with premium cell phone cases.

Competencies
In this project, you will demonstrate your mastery of the following competencies:
Explain the drivers of globalization and how they impact business decisions
Differentiate between domestic and international business environments
Describe the factors that contribute to international market attractiveness and entry
Scenario
You are a business analyst working at a small domestic organization that produces high-quality cell phone cases.
Your organization has begun to see its sales flatten in the domestic market. While the organization is not losing
money, leadership would like to explore options to continue growth. One option that leadership has noticed
competitors attempting is entering international markets.
You have been asked to examine the benefits, drawbacks, and key considerations for your organization to enter
one of the global markets below, and to summarize your findings in a business brief for leadership.
Select one of the following international markets to use for your course project:
Argentina
Brazil
China
India
Indonesia
Japan
Nigeria
Russia
South Africa
If you would like to use another country for your course project, please reach out to your instructor.
Directions
Develop a business brief that explains why many organizations are investing in efforts to expand their businesses
internationally, the key impacts of global business, and cultural considerations for entering the global market. You
