Week 1: Home Page
What makes a good home page for a business? What are those key features that catch the attention of potential customers and keep them clicking on an organization’s page?
When someone lands on an organization’s website from a search engine, organizations want customers to continue to click. If you start to look around at your favorite companies, you might notice that the home pages have a similar element. A website’s home page is essential to the site’s success. Here are the top 5 elements that Hughes (2019) state make a successful home page:
- Logo and Branding Images: Logos usually are on the top left side of a home page. Why? Because that is where a user’s eyes are drawn to or at the center of the navigation bar. Images usually take up a portion of most websites’ designs, including home pages.
- The Hero: A ‘hero’ section including the organization’s mission statement or tag line. A hero section is usually made up of a large image or slideshow, and it comes right below the navigation bar. The idea for the hero section is to quickly give visitors an idea of what to expect from the rest of a website.
- Call to Action: Every website has a goal = customers. The easiest way to get customers to do something is by asking them or a Call to Action. The Call to Action can be a simple phrase or a button.
- Navigation: Customers want to easily find what they are looking for. Great home pages have easy menus and navigation
- Contact Information: A contact form is a must for a great home page. Customers can usually find contact forms at the end of the home page.
