For Q5 Decision, you have made a clear decision to recommend against a partnership with Southwest—very good! Your next step is to relate your reasoning to one of the ethical concepts or theories discussed in the competency readings (the Learning Resources). In other words, what ethical concept or theory supports your recommendation being the right thing to do and why? By identifying an ethical theory and grounding your reasoning in it, you will make your reasoning all the more persuasive. (Later, in the targeted message, you will adapt the message of this ethical theory for the public, and also explain how it informed Gauze & Effect’s decision.) Below are the specific readings you should look at in the Learning Resources. I recommend that you focus on the ethical theories of consequentialism and utilitarianism, on the one hand, and Kant’s categorical imperative, on the other hand. These represent the two most popular and commonly used ethical theories. Then, once you’ve identified the ethical theory that you think most closely supports your reasoning, briefly explain it in your answer and use it to support your belief that your recommendation is the ethically right thing to do. Be sure to cite your source for the ethical theory you select.

We recommend to Dr. Lee that you do not partner up with Southwest due to all their controversy
connected with them. We do not believe that it is really a good idea as we believe that it will taint
the company and not actually benefit the company financially, especially since we are such a
new green company. We should actually wait for Southwest to have a better reputation prior to
partnering up with them.” On Tuesday morning, Southwest Flight 1380 departed New York
for Dallas with 149 people aboard. But about 20 minutes in, what sounded like explosions
boomed from the plane’s left side, starting a sequence that ended with one woman dead,
seven people injured and an emergency landing at Philadelphia International Airport.”(CNN
Wire, 2018) This may take a couple of years but at least we are aware that we are giving them a
chance to try again before gambling our name. If you really want to consider working with them
the only last option would be to be a silent investor. However, I still think that we should not
work with this company as they have much growing to do. Southwest would need to rebuild their
reputation by providing constant compliant reports, inspection reports, and eventually allowing
our inspectors to do a full sweep of the pains and the company providing the inspections as
well.
With so many competitors that Southwest has we can venture into looking elsewhere until they
have met the regulations that have not been met in the past couple of years.

Our company decided not to partner up with Southwest airlines due to the past incidents which
have been associated with the company over the years. With the reputation that the company
has exhibited we feel the need to be partnered up with a company that aligns with our beliefs as
well. The final goal of the company is to have an extraordinary reputation and provide excellent
service in every which way possible.
We unfortunately feel that Southwest does not believe in the consumer as they have constant
incidents of injuring passengers and have yet to really show a dramatic change or release a
statement stating how apologetic they are. I noticed it might be a disappointment to a lot of
people but unfortunately we realize that we are a company of ethics, morals, and the belief that
we can do better by standing strong and only partnering up with companies who believe in the
well-being of their consumers. “The action is good if the consequences are good” (Holmer,
2021). though Southwest has been around for a while and we are a starting company, we want
our name to stand out with high expectations, values and morally ethic codes. We understand
that this is disappointing to the community and our employees and we promised that we will be
proposing a new option for us to partner with which will be more exciting and available ethically
to us. We do want to let you know that we took everyone’s opinion to consideration and we
appreciate that you filled out the questionnaire connected with should we or should we not
partner up with Southwest. However, we will believe in giving them a chance in the future within
the next 3 to 5 years as long as they commit to growth and no longer continue down the path of
destruction. Based on the final vote I stated we will not be partnering up with southwest.
Utilitarianism, it’s this ethical theory that’s all about making people happy, you know? The whole
idea is to maximize happiness and satisfy as many folks as possible. But here’s the kicker – it
comes with its fair share of consequences. Still, the word on the street is that, despite the
drawbacks, it manages to bring joy to the masses.
Utilitarianism is an ethical theory that’s based on making people happy, right? The goal is to
maximize happiness and satisfy as many people as possible. Nevertheless, it does not come
without its share of consequences. However, despite its drawbacks, it is said to bring joy to a
wide audience despite its shortcomings.
When Gauze & Effect was considering partnering with Southwest, they had this utilitarian
mindset. “Utilitarianism is a species of consequentialism, the general doctrine in ethics that
actions (or types of action) should be evaluated on the basis of their consequences.” (West,
2023) As they considered the benefits for their customers and stakeholders, they considered
the happiness and satisfaction that would result. The twist is that they also weighed the
potential consequences. Ultimately, this utilitarian outlook influenced our decision not to
partner, ensuring the majority found joy despite some challenges.
Ultimately, utilitarianism isn’t just a philosophical concept floating in the sky; it’s a practical
guide for business decisions, steering companies like Gauze & Effect toward choices that
prioritize overall happiness and well-being.
