MIS 502: Decision Support Systems – Project Description
1. Introduction:
The aim of the project is to perform a simulation study of a real world ‘QUEUING’ problem
where you would build a simulation model, test it, and then suggest improvement in the
existing system. The main steps of the project are depicted in the diagram presented below:
Collect Data:
Serivce

The Project mainly aims to give you an opportunity to practice and apply the core concepts,
and methods used in a simulation study. You are expected to demonstrate rigor in doing
your project. For details see simulation study roadmap in the first lecture related to
simulation, and ensure that you meticulously follow all the steps involved. You also have to
make a class presentation on your project.
2. Grade Distribution:
Project Grade Breakdown (Total 20%)
Problem Statement, and study objective(s)
(Due: Oct. 13, 2022)
Initial conceptual model and input data requirements (Due: Oct. 23, 2022)
Data gathering and simulation Modeling (Due: Oct. 27, 2022)
Final Report (including details of all steps shown in simulation roadmap –
lec10-11) and Presentation/Demo (if feasible) (Due: Nov. 03, 2022)

3. Rules:
1. The project must be done in a group of 4 (min) up to 5 (max) students. The group as well
as project problem must be finalized ASAP.
2. Mid-project updates about initial findings must be submitted on the announced dates.
3. The final report must contain all the areas of investigation discussed in the introduction
above and must be submitted on the specified deadline.
4. Presentations (PowerPoint Slides) will be scheduled after final submissions (if feasible).
4. Potential Problems:
Following are some suggested high level ideas. Either elaborate on the following problems
or bring your own and discuss it with your instructor before finalizing it.
Product/Task
1
Problem: Multi-stage multi-server Job-shops (manufacturing).
Objective: Performance evaluation, finding bottleneck and performance
improvements (e.g. cost/production/cycle time/server utilization)
2
Problem: OPD/ER of a hospital
Objective: Determine current service levels, find appropriate levels of
resources (receptionists/doctors/nurses) required during off-peak and
peak.
3
Problem: Bank customer services (branch or phone banking).
Objective: Determine current service levels, find appropriate levels of
resources required (number of counters/bank staff etc.)
4
Problem: Checkout counter planning in hyper-marts
Objective: Determine time-wise service levels, find appropriate scheduling
of counters and staff
5
Problem: Mobily/STC service centers
Objective: Determine current service levels, find appropriate levels of
resources (staff/POS machines etc.) required
