CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

As a reflection of the increased influence of corporate social responsibility, most major
corporations now publish their own annual corporate responsibility reports. Most of these are
published on an annual basis and made available on the company’s website. There is no mandatory
format or content for these types of reports, and they tend to differ from company to company.
They are very easy to find on the internet. Your assignment is to pick a company and evaluate its
most recent corporate responsibility report. Assume that you are preparing the evaluation to
present to the class, and that your listener is not familiar with the company’s social responsibility
activities. The format is up to you, but as always, an organized and thorough analysis is expected.
Some areas you should definitely include in your analysis are:
 Relevant facts and background about the company itself
 The company’s social responsibility initiatives and features of these activities
 Special
issues or areas of concern for the company’s social responsibility program (for
example, Gap and Nike both face special social responsibility challenges related to production
of their product in “sweatshops”)
 Your evaluation of the company’s efforts
 Areas that surprised you or that you think the general public would be surprised to learn
about
 Interesting facts or highlights from the report
 Major challenges faced by the company in their social responsibility efforts
You may of course find other relevant information to include in your report. DO NOT cut and paste
from the actual report into the assignment. Work that cuts and pastes from the actual report or is
verbatim from the actual report will be rejected. ***The most important part of this project is your
analysis of the company’s efforts and should be supported by your reasoning, evaluation, and
explanation. Conclusory statements like “I was impressed with Company X’s efforts” without
support are not acceptable. There is no minimum length – just be thorough and use your own
judgment.*** This is worth 7% of your grade, so be sure to give this your time and effort.
I have posted two sample reports from previous semesters for you to read and see what I’m looking
for. You may not do your report on those companies from the same year (Patagonia or Target
before 2020). You may do Patagonia or Target as long as the report you are evaluating is from later
than 2020.
Your entire report is not due until Friday, March 15. By Monday, February 12, you should turn in a
link to the specific company report that you are using for your report.
