Essay #2 Homework Assignment
Each essay should be written in your own words, be one page in length (single-spaced, 12pt. Times New Roman).
You should find, read, integrate, and reference at least one source (e.g., a journal, news article, etc…). Plagiarism is strictly prohibited. If you include language (even if rearranged or modified) from another source, then the source should be cited (and as appropriate, language should be enclosed in quotes). Essays submitted must be originally written this semester, for this class. You may not repurpose work from other classes, even if authentically authored by you. Please also review course policy, prohibiting the use of Artificial Intelligence (including ChatGPT).
Grading criteria: Essays will be graded primarily on the following criteria: clarity of expression; responsiveness to the essay prompt (in substance and form); bases provided in support of assertions made; practical import; use of language appropriate for the academic environment.
Please be sure to submit your essay assignment in Canvas (in PDF or MS-Word format), on time. It would be wise to plan to submit your HW assignments at least several days before the due date, in order to eliminate the risk of a hiccup. Because you have a great deal of advance time during which to submit your essay, it will be entirely your responsibility to do so, and late HW assignments will not be excused (even with most verifiable excuses).
Essay #2: Hypothetical Filmmaking Project
Suppose that you are an established film producer-director. While relaxing on vacation, you read a novel that you love and that you think would make for a fantastic film. To make your film, you need to, among other things: acquire the rights to adapt the novel; hire a cast and crew for the making of the film; hire a composer to score the film in postproduction; and distribute the film. For this assignment, please do the following (one paragraph for each) in your role as the film’s sole producer:
- Discuss how you will approach the author/publisher of the novel to acquire the rights and note at least one important contract term/provision that will be included in your agreement with the writer.
- Discuss the union/guild requirements that you need to observe and comply with when hiring the cast and crew.
- Note 2 or 3 key contract terms that you would include in your agreement with the music composer that you hire.
- Discuss how you would approach major theater chains and/or online streaming services (such as Netflix and Amazon Prime) to form contracts to air the film. Discuss at least one contract term that you would address in these agreements.
