20th Century World History Final Paper
Instructions: Submit your essay by the due date. Make sure you include plenty of specific examples.
Consider how to incorporate place, players, and time into your essay. The more grounded your essay
is in historical detail, the stronger it will be.
Final Paper Requirements:
– 750 – 1,000 words. I am looking for a polished, final product that has a clear argumentative
thesis, details, and historical examples.
– 12 point font
– Readable style (Times New Roman, Arial, etc.)
– Left-Justified
– Name and title on the top of the front page.
Prompts: Select one of the following topics and explore issues related. You do not need to address all
of these items, or may want to include others. Be sure to have a thesis driven statement that
structures and organizes your paper. Include lots of details and examples to remain grounded in
history.
1. Colonization: How did colonization in the 1600-1800s shape the world? How did it lead to
inequalities between separate regions of the Earth? Explain how decolonization operated in
the mid-20th Century. Think about the long legacy of colonization, neo-colonization, and
the ongoing effort to decolonize.
2. Internationalism vs Isolationism: Chart the expansion of the US and their oscillating role in
global affairs. How has the US moved between internationalism/interventionism and
isolationism? How did these periods differ, and what prompted the US to switch from one
to the other?
3. Cold War: Who won the Cold War? Is the Cold War actually over, and if so what was the
outcome? Go beyond simply US vs USSR, Capitalism vs. Communism. What were the
stakes, what did the various sides believe about themselves, and how did the “end” of the
Cold War shape emerging 21st Century geopolitics?
4. Food History: Food and recipes represent a global blending of technology, science,
immigration, culture, and the environment to name a few subjects you can explore in this
option. Pick a food you enjoy today and investigate its production, consumption, and
distribution over time and place. How does this represent global history? How does your
food tie into themes of the course?
