Make sure to save ALL of your references in the citations slide at
the end!
1. Explain the signs and symptoms of this disorder in a patient
2. Research any possible treatments/therapies and describe how they may increase the quality
of life in the patient of the genetic disorder your group is researching
a) Choose one treatment or therapy that is used to help increase the quality of life to
describe in detail how it works to relieve the signs/symptoms
3. Develop a clinical scenario in which you may interact with a patient with this genetic disorder

Collaborate with your group to answer the following questions. Make
sure to save ALL of your references in the citations slide at the end!
1. Explain how this disorder occurs at the DNA/chromosome level.
– Is this disorder caused by a mutation? If so, is it a single base pair substitution, an insertion, or a deletion? Is the mutation on
an autosome or a sex chromosome?
– Is this disorder caused by a translocation? If so, what is a translocation? Which chromosomes are affected?
– Is this disorder caused by aneuploid? If so, what is aneuploidy? Which chromosomes are affected? What chromosome is
affected?
2. How does the mutation change the protein that is expressed?
– Is the protein nonfunctional? Dysfunctional?
– Is there less of the protein than normal? More than normal?
3. Explain how the mutation and altered protein expression leads to the disorder.
– What kinds of cells/tissues are affected by the disorder?
– What is the normal role of the protein in the cell? Once the protein is changed by the mutation, how does this affect the cell?

Collaborate with your group to answer the following questions. Make
sure to save ALL of your references in the citations slide at the end!
Is the disorder inherited through multiple generations?
If yes:
1. Describe the inheritance pattern (autosomal recessive, autosomal dominant, or X-linked recessive? What
do these terms mean?)
2. Develop a Punnett Square to demonstrate how the disorder can be passed from parents to children
3. Research to find a pedigree chart showing inheritance of the disorder through generations. Be sure to
include a citation for your pedigree chart in the citations slide!
If no (aneuploidies):
1. Describe how this disorder was discovered
2. Explain how this disorder can have a genetic origin, but not be passed through multiple generations
3. Include a diagram (recommended: of nondisjunction) to explain how a parent without the disorder can have
children with the disorder

• General tips:
• Your presentation should be 5-8 slides total highlighting the information learned
throughout the project. The information does NOT need to be divided up by module
– organize your research in a way that makes sense.
• Each slide needs to have at least one image
• All text on slides need to be in bulleted format. Do not write paragraphs of content
on your slides.
• All text on slides needs to be written in your own words. No copying and pasting –
that is plagiarism!
• Your citation slide at the end should include all resources cited using APA (7th ed.)
format.
Citations
• Make sure all of your sources are cited using APA guidelines
