Project 3: Thinking About Privilege

Now that we have started discussing stratification, it is a good time to reflect on our own privilege

Even the most marginalized groups in this country have privilege…simply because they are in this country. They have privilege over people in countries with fewer resources and services. A key to having better interactions and improving societal relations is knowing and checking your own privilege.Part 1: Identify Your Categories

Take a moment to list out how you identify in the following categories:

   Gender   Race   Ethnicity   Ability Status   Sexual Orientation   Education   Religion   Class and/or income (get a more accurate view using this calculator    Links to an external site.)   Language   Nationality

Part 2: Answer the following questions about the categories you belong to:

   What category memberships do you think of most often? Why?   What category memberships do you consider least? Why do you think that is?   What category memberships hurt your options or opportunities the most? How?   What category memberships provide the most access or privileges? How?   What category memberships have the strongest effect on your self-image? How?   What category membership plays a greater role in how others see you? How?

Answer the following questions:

   What was your score?   Were you able to see some of your privilege after answering the questions?   Reflect again on your previous answers, can you more clearly see what privilege may have a greater impact on your life? Which types of privilege benefit you more? What lack of privilege causes you the most obstacles?   I took this test based on my life as a college student or younger. My score was 3. How does your score compare? Why do you think there might be differences? How do such differences impact your life chances and the life chances of others?
