In this assessment students will undertake exercises relating to this unit’s weekly seminar topics. Each week in this unit we look at a different global disaster, which
we cover in detail in our weekly classes and seminars. In each of the weekly seminars (from weeks 2-11), students will discuss a key question about the weekly
topic. Questions will be revealed to students in the seminars, and will be available in the weekly study guides (as we go). The questions will relate specifically to the
weekly essential reading (Content-Weekly Readings-Reading List). At the end of each seminar, all students must write their own answer to the weekly question.
Each weekly answer should be 100 words (10 weekly submissions total 1000 words).
The ten individual weekly answers are to be submitted in the one document at the end of the trimester (via Cloud Deakin). Students who would like to have
their first two weekly submissions marked early in order to get a sense of how they are going in this task have the option to submit their answers to weeks 2 and 3
by Monday 1 August (also via Cloud Deakin). These early submissions will then be marked and returned to students before the due date of Assessment 2.
In each weekly submission students are expected to:
■ Answer the question;
■ Show their knowledge of the weekly essential reading in their answer; and
■ Use formal writing and referencing
Weekly submissions must be individually written and submitted together through the assignment folder in Cloud Deakin. Please note that the use of the weekly
essential reading must be referenced fully and correctly in these submissions, using either Oxford or Harvard referencing styles. Students must also make sure
that their submissions are written in their own words.
Weekly submissions will be assessed on the basis of the following marking criteria:
■
question;
☐
engagement with the weekly essential reading;
referencing; and
writing and presentation
Further information about the marking criteria can be found in the Seminar/Online Exercises Marking Rubric in the A1 Assessment Folder (Content-Assessment-
Assessment 1).
