The assignments are linked to course objectives. All course objectives must be met to successfully
complete the course. Omission of an assignment equates to not meeting all course objectives. Thus, all
assignments must be completed and submitted to pass the course. This means that the lack of
completion of any assignments such as a discussions or paper assignment, will result in an “F” course
grade.
Late Assignment/Exam Policy & Attendance: Late assignments will be deducted 25% each day late,
unless otherwise indicated within the syllabus. If you have extenuating circumstances that may justify an
exception to this policy, please request this in writing to your professor no later than 72 hours prior to the
due date of the assignment. Late assignments are not accepted for grade credit after late for three
days. Permission for an extension may or may not be granted, solely depending upon the professor’s
discretion. Documentation of illness may be required. Attendance and participation are important
components of the learning process. If you know of an absence in advance, it is your responsibility to
notify the course faculty member and to turn in all assignments by the due date. In the case of an extended
illness, please contact your professor. Numerous absences can hinder the ability to meet course objectives
and this may adversely affect the grade received in the course or result in a failure of the course. For an
online course, online participation (postings, active coursework each week, asking questions) is
attendance.
Assignment Descriptions
Orientation Quiz: The orientation quiz reviews main points from the orientation video and course
syllabus. The Orientation quiz is found in D2L Brightspace under quizzes, and select orientation quiz.
Discussions: Interactions are vital in all learning environments. It is for this reason that discussions are
part of the teaching/learning strategy. Four discussions are in an online forum (D2L Brightspace). Each
main reply will have a professional nursing article cited and referenced. For discussions in this
course, please cite two scholarly sources in the initial posting. One should be a peer reviewed journal
article. The other citation/reference may be the textbook or another scholarly source. All articles must
have publication dates on or after 2009. If the article is not fully discussed in the post, a one paragraph
summary of the article is presented. The student will end their reply by asking the group a unique
question about the topic under discussion. The expectation is for each student to participate in each
discussion. Each student will reply to at least 2 different peers. The student will cite/reference a
5
scholarly source in peers’ reply posts. See syllabus appendix for the detailed discussion instructions and
grading rubric.
Information Management Certificate: For this assignment, pretend you have been hired for a new
position at the National Institutes for Health as an Informatics Nurse! Congratulations! One of your first
duties on the job is to complete the NIH Information Management course. This course is for anyone in the
public but geared for new hires or the public at NIH. It includes an excellent source of current standards
of privacy awareness and electronic records management.
Health Literacy and Patient Education Appraisal/Evaluation Project: Registered Nurses are
responsible for patient education that is based on an understanding of health literacy. Learners will
explore health literacy and critically evaluate an online educational item. Special grading note: It’s ok to
turn the assignment in early, but the assignments will not be graded until after the due date. This
helps avoid students taking advantage of comments made to those who turned their work in early.
Use the Readability Tool to determine readability levels. http://read-able.com/
Use the framework at NIH: Evaluating Health Information on the Internet for your appraisal
https://ods.od.nih.gov/Health_Information/How_To_Evaluate_Health_Information_on_the_Internet_Que
stions_and_Answers.aspx
Learners will then create a PowerPoint Presentation that addresses health literacy issues and provide a
critique of an online educational item. All the information is to be supported by current research and
references must be listed (have a reference list at the end of the PowerPoint). For this assignment, cite the
website, the Readability Test Tool, and at least one journal article. For detailed information, see the
grading rubric. See syllabus appendix for detailed instructions and grading rubric.
Students may complete this assignment alone or in a group of students in the course (no more than
6 students in a group, please). Please let the professor know if you decide to work in a group and
the group names. If students do work in a group, all students must submit the assignment to their
courseroom dropbox and NURS1100 portfolio for grade credit.
Reminder/Verify placement of your Health Literacy and Patient Education Project placed in your
Nursing Portfolio, NURS1100: Note: For this course, your Health Literacy and Patient Education
project will be placed in your Nursing Portfolio NURS1100. ***Also complete the quiz (not really a
quiz) in which you certify that you submitted your assignment to your portfolio.***Due the same day the
assignment is due.
Informatics Security: For this assignment, pretend you have been hired for a new position at the
National Institutes for Health as an Informatics Nurse! Congratulations! One of your first duties on the
job is to complete the NIH Information Security course. This course is for anyone in the public but geared
for new hires or the public at NIH. It includes an excellent session of standards specific to informatics
security.

Student Portfolio
For each nursing course taken in the nursing program, students will be asked to submit an assignment
they completed to their personal portfolio. The portfolio is designed to highlight the work that you have
completed throughout the program. At the end of the course your professor will give you instructions on
where you can post the assignment online. For this course, your Health Literacy and Patient
Education project will be part of the portfolio. Your final grade will not be posted for the course until
the assignment is placed in the portfolio.
Professional Nursing Journal Articles and References

The journal cannot be bought at a grocery store
The journal is not a newspaper
The article is not an editorial or advertisement
The article is at least 3 pages in length
The journal will be found in CINAHL
The article is less than 5 yrs. old
The article will be from a journal that is peer reviewed
The article will have the word nursing in it
If the article does not meet these criteria, please ask the professor for permission to use it before
including it in your assignments.
Netiquette Policy: Please follow the guidelines established below.
9
1. Be respectful in your posts and comments to others and about others.
2. Make sure your postings meet the required word count.
3. Postings should be professional.
4. Stay on topic.
5. Humor is easy to misinterpret online, so it is best to keep humor to a minimum. Avoid sarcasm.
6. Avoid the use of texting abbreviations.
7. Please do not use all capitals in discussions or emails, as this is the equivalent of yelling online.
The exception to this would be some abbreviations, such as RN or USA.
Feedback and Writing Improvement: When I grade an assignment, I will offer detailed feedback in
regard to APA. I expect that any feedback offered will be incorporated into subsequent papers. If this
does not occur, up to 20 % may be deducted in addition to any other point deduction for APA
included in the standard grading rubric. If at any time you have any questions, please do not hesitate
to let me know.
Professor and student expectations for this course
Expectations of you:
1. Read the materials assigned for each module!
2. Look closely at the grading rubric for each assignment. This will walk you through how to
achieve 100% on each assignment.
3. Discussion posts should reflect that you read the material, critically thought about the material,
and are applying your learning to answer the questions. Personal examples or experiences are
encouraged!
4. Read the comments I provide you for each discussion post. Apply the suggested changes to the
next discussion post. Failing to incorporate my recommendations will result in point deductions.
5. Reply to your peers if they prompt you with a question. This not only expands the conversation,
it’s also respectful.
6. Please remember that the grading rubric for discussion posts is based on a 5-point scale.
However, each discussion post is worth a total of 10 points in the gradebook. So, this means if
you meet all of the requirements of grading rubric, your score is a 5, which translates to a final
grade of a 10. However, if you receive points deduction of .25 points, for example, on your
discussion post, this results in a 9.5 final grade.
7. When doing your self-grading for each discussion post, self-reflect on each of the grading rubric
elements. Be realistic about your score, don’t just assign yourself a 10 if you don’t feel you
deserve it.
8. I expect you to challenge yourself, challenge each other, be respectful, be bold, and learn!!
Believe it or not, much of what you will learn in this course has multiple applications for all
nursing professionals and multiple different nursing roles.
Expectations of me:
10
1. I read ALL discussion post entries. I don’t always comment on each discussion, but be assured
that I am reading them.
2. Sometimes I make comments and ask questions of you based on your initial post. However, if I
prompt you with a question about clarifying or expanding your initial post, this indicates
that I don’t feel you’ve demonstrated a full understanding of the material. The chances are
very high that you will receive a points deduction if you do not respond back to me
appropriately.
3. After the discussion 1 post, I provide extensive amounts of feedback. This includes feedback
about writing mechanics, thoroughness of answering the questions, and APA formatting. I tend to
be very lenient with grading for discussion 1 only, meaning that I won’t count off many points
especially for APA errors. However, I expect that you will read my comments and
incorporate changes into future discussion posts accordingly. A failure to do so will result in
points deductions.
4. It is ok to turn assignments in early. However, the assignments will not be graded until after the
due date. If you choose to post discussion posts early, please make note of point #3. There may be
points deductions if a pattern of repeated errors is noted.
5. I will post grades and feedback within a day or two of when you complete your self-grade quiz.
6. I respond to email within 24-48 hours generally. (In the event I’m unavailable for some reason, I
will let you know this in advance, so you can plan accordingly.)

posts.
Each initial discussion posting should end with a question related to the topic to stimulate further
discussion.
The initial posting must include at least two APA citations and references; one journal article (2009
or newer) and one additional scholarly source.
The participation postings to peers must be substantial and may include a story about a related

Information Management Certificate
Information Management Certificate: For this assignment, pretend you have been hired for a new
position at the National Institutes for Health as an Informatics Nurse! Congratulations! One of your first
duties on the job is to complete the NIH Information Management course. This course is for anyone in the
public but geared for new hires or the public at NIH. It includes an excellent review of privacy awareness
and electronic records management. You will need to complete the course in a single session without
closing your browser to earn a certificate (less than one hour).
Information Management at National Institutes of Health (NIH) Go to the website
https://irtsectraining.nih.gov/PAC/PA_01_005.aspx
Complete the course! Access via the public access portal.
At the end of the IM course, you will be able to access a completion certificate. You will be asked your
name. It is fine to put your first name or initials only on the certificate. If you choose to use your full
name, that is fine. Your name is not recorded anywhere and your name is not used by NIH in any matter.
It is only so you can have a certificate with your name on it and it not recorded in any way. Your privacy
is protected.
Upon completion you will earn a certification that you will submit to the D2L Brightspace for grade
credit.
Note: When you print your certificate, on the print screen, you can change the printer to print to PDF file
on your computer so that you can easily save the certificate as a PDF file. This will be easy to submit to
the Assignment dropbox. You can then print the PDF file from your computer if you want a printed copy
for work.
Tip: If you are short on time, turn off the audio and simply read each screen.

Tips for Effective PowerPoint Presentations
1. Use bullet points or key phrases. Do not use paragraphs on the slides as this is distracting to the
human eye.
2. For paragraph or more detailed information, use the Notes section that is found under the slide.
Click on notes and then you can drag it to make the notes section larger if you wish. Put details in
the notes section.
3. Avoid cluttered, crowded, and busy slides. Put keywords or a few bullet points on the slide. Use
the notes section under the slide for details and longer narratives.
4. Use source citations on the slide. You can also include source citations in the notes section.
5. Start with a title page that is eye appealing
6. Use font size 32 or larger. You may have to adjust this based on the room size.
7. Use easy to read font, such as Arial and Times New Roman. Use only one font.
8. Use images as appropriate. Copyright friendly images are available at:
http://webquest.org/freemedia.php (Check each site for attribution. You do not need to pay for
these images and should take caution when asked for money.)
9. Be sure to use white space. A poster or PowerPoint that is too crowded is not appealing to the
eye.
10. Avoid red and green colors (red/green colorblindness)
11. Be sure to proofread
12. Use spell and grammar check!
13. Cite and reference sources!
14. Include a reference page
15. Sometimes PowerPoints with images can become large files. This makes it difficult to email or
post in a discussion forum. For this reason, you can compress the images in PowerPoint and PDF
the final version. Email or attach to discussions the PDF version. If you want to PDF your
PowerPoint with your notes, so the viewer can read the notes section (essential for graded items),
then select print, but change the printer to save as PDF file. Now, select to print the slides with
notes. Save as PDF file. This should save it with the slides and notes visible.
