NATS 1870: UNDERSTANDING COLOUR (online)Short Assignment Requirements
“Docendo discimus”
(“The best way to learn is to teach.” – a Latin proverb.)
And, the best way to teach is to… ask questions!
For each of the 4 short assignments in the course, you will design – ‘ask’ – two complete multiple-choice
questions. One question will be based on the assigned readings, and another question will be based on
lesson notes/videos. Let your creative juices flow, and new neural pathways fire away, as you take a turn at
being ‘teachers’ by creating new questions within the guidelines and constraints listed below.

IMPORTANT: a grade of zero will be given for questions created on readings and lessons outside of
the assigned last name ranges listed in the table above. No exceptions, no-make-ups, no alternatives.
SUBMITTING THE ASSIGNMENT IN eCLASS
To submit your short assignment – the two multiple-choice questions – you will simply enter the text of
your questions in the Assignment 3 Submission link, on the course home page in eClass.

FACTUAL QUESTION (1 mark)
Create a multiple-choice question based on the assigned course readings, from the relevant lesson
assigned based on your last name (see table on the first page).
•
question should be ‘facts-based’ (such as definition-question, history-question, or any other ‘lookit-up’ type question)
•
question must have at least 4 answer options (a, b, c, d)
•
question must have only 1 correct answer, and this answer must be clearly indicated with a text line
below the question (eg: ‘Answer: B’)
•
must include the reference to the readings (source and page) used for your question
Example of a factual question:
A photon is
a. a very light (in mass) particle.
b. wave of disturbance in the electric field.
c. created by passing light through a prism.
d. a packet of energy contained in light.
Answer: d

CONCEPTUAL QUESTION (2 marks)
Create a multiple-choice question based on the lesson slides and/or videos, from the relevant lesson
assigned based on your last name (see table on the first page).
•
question should be a ‘conceptual’ (or ‘application’) type of question (rather than ‘look-up-theanswer’ type question), requiring a higher-order problem-solving effort to be done, to arrive at the
answer. Try to create questions that address some of the more challenging concepts in the lesson,
and/or ask the reader to solve a problem (such as ‘how would we do this?’, ‘what if we changed
variable X, how would it affect the outcome?’, compare/contrast scenarios, etc). Higher marks will
be given for the more challenging concept-based questions, while facts-only questions will earn
partial marks only.
•
question must have at least 4 answer options (a, b, c, d)
•
question must have only 1 correct answer, and this answer must be clearly indicated with a text line
below the question (eg: ‘Answer: B’)
•
must indicate lesson number and slide number(s) as reference, for the topic used for your question
Example of a conceptual question:
Inverse relationship between wavelength and energy of an EM wave means that
a. 100nm wave travels faster than 300nm wave
b. 100nm wave has the same energy as 300nm wave
c. 100nm wave is more energetic than 300nm wave
d. 100nm wave travels slower than 300nm wave
e. 100nm wave is less energetic than 300nm wave
Answer: c

IMPORTANT: all questions must be your own original creation, and NOT based on/copied from any
other source, of any kind or medium, or any other person (including fellow students in the course).
Questions determined to be copied from other sources will receive a grade of zero, at the very minimum,
and may be subject to further academic-dishonesty investigations.
EVALUATION RUBRIC
Your questions will be evaluated on these simple grading scales:
FACTUAL QUESTION:
/1
0: not suitable/not completed
0.5: somewhat suitable and/or somewhat relevant to the topic
1.0: satisfactory
CONCEPTUAL QUESTION: /2
0: not suitable/not completed
0.5: somewhat suitable and/or somewhat relevant to the topic
1.0: minimum-requirements satisfactory and/or purely look-it-up/definition type question
1.5: somewhat above minimum-requirement in question quality, but most focus is still on look-it-up type
question
2.0: significantly above minimum-requirement in question quality, demonstrating a conceptual, problemsolving type question
