The statistics below are from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. In 1965
when data was first collected, more than 50% of the population smoked. The
highest percentage of smokers continues to be the young adult group from ages 20
to 24.

In 1995, teens smoked an average of 13 cigarettes per day. In 2012, that number
was 11. It is estimated that as few as three or four cigarettes a day will result in
addiction to nicotine. Canadian teens smoke about one million cigarettes per day.

Task
Answer the following questions based on the two sets of data provided and some of
your own additional research and ideas.
1. What is the general trend for numbers of smokers in both age groups?
2. Are there any anomalies (unusual pieces of data)? Identify an anomalies, and
suggest an explanation.
3. What do you predict the future trends for this data will be? Why?
4. What trend do you observe when comparing different genders? Why might this
difference exist?
5. Why does the 20 to 24 year old age group have the highest percentage of
smokers?
6. Were you surprised by any of the data? Why or why not?

Answer 1
The number of smokers reduces with time among both genders implying that as time
goes on, people are doing away with their smoking habits and those addicted are winning the
fight against addictions. The rate of decrease among teens is slower but higher among adults.
Answer 2
The percentage of smokers was higher in 1981 among the two groups than at any other
time. Also in the same year, among the adults, the number of female smokers was more than the
number of male smokers. Before 1981, more females were smokers compared to males but the
trend was changing (Saskatchewan. Department of Health, 2020). 1981 was the last year when
there were more females than males smoking in Canada before the number of females dropped
down to men. In the year 2008, the number of male adult smokers increased more than usual.
Answer 3
Since 1981 among both adults and teens, the number of smokers has been reduced. The
trend has been going on and on and if maintained, the country shall manage to control the
nation’s smoking habits and deal with the tobacco addicts.
Answer 4
When comparing the smoking habits of different teen and young adult genders, I observe
that more males are smokers when compared to females (Smoking behaviour of Canadians,
2020). The higher number of males is because of the company men indulge themselves with and
also takes smoking as one of their recreational activities.

3
There is a higher percentage of smokers among the young adults aged 20 to 24 years
because, at that age, males have fully taken control of themselves. They have completed
schooling and are away from the parents or the guardians who used to control them and make
sure they utilize their time productively away from abusing substances. Males are that age group
have begun to be responsible for their lives.
Answer 6
The data did not come as a surprise. I expected the number percentage of peop0le who
smoke to be declining from the 1980s to now. In the 1980s, the lifestyle was very different from
now. Tobacco was largely grown as a cash crop for income but in the current days, other
economic activities have been embraced in that it has reduced the growth of tobacco hence
discouraging smokers by reducing tobacco in circulations (Tobacco control programme, Health
Canada:: Supplementary tables, CTUMS annual, 2022, 2022). Additionally, doctors and health
experts are discouraging smoking tobacco because of the side effects the direct smokers, passive
smokers, and the environment.
